I want to custom make a litter box for the bottom left side of my 142 Ferret Nation. I want to get some sort of bin that will span the entire side of the cage under the first shelf.... something that I can cut into so that the ferrets can easily climb inside. I have seen these things made in lots of cages but I didn't see a thread specifically about this.
I measured the space as 22"-23" in length and about 17" deep. I need the bin to be as high backed as possible.
Suggestions? Thanks!

I know some here have used sterilite containers that just fit into there.

Here's my old setup: It's an under-the-bed rubbermaid container with one side cut low and holes drilled in the back for attaching. It's not that high in the back, though I never had a problem with mine about that. You could probably slide a piece of panel or plexi or the like between it and the bars.

Wow that 28qt bin seems perfect... almost exact dimensions. I just bought a dremel and so I can cut it and sand off the sharp edges easily. I take it the best way to attach it to the cage is to use a few clamps? Or I could do something like the lock crock bowls have.

I use shower hooks because I already had them on hand. A clamp or a lock-crock mechanism would also work great though.

What about brand of litter? What should I buy for my Sterilite?

Right now, I'm using hardwood pellets normally made for a stove. They have been baked/treated so there are no resins left, so perfectly safe. I pay $5.00 for a 40lb bag. Previously, I'd been using swheat scoop cat litter(wheat based), or World's Best Cat Litter(corn based). Both are rather expensive here though. If I had to pick a favourite it would be world's best.

For litter I love worlds best cat litter multicat formula. It clumps and keeps odor down pretty well. It's flushable too. My last bag cost me about $25 and has lasted me 6 weeks. Pricey but it makes my life easier

Currently I use Yesterdays News. It's okay i guess. Petsmart here sells it for $15 for a 30lb bag and sometimes there's a manufactures coupon on the bag for Buy 1 get 1 free. So its $15 (plus tax) for 60lb of litter as opposed to the Marshall's $10 for 10lb.

I'm in Canada, so our brands would likely be different.

Hmm... I emailed the breeder and asked what litter she used. She said in a past email that they learn to use the litter box from day 1... so maybe it would be best if I used the same litter she uses. If I buy two of the $25 Worlds Best bags then that should last me 3 months if one bag lasts around 6 weeks.
My finances now has 266 every 8 months for 500 large adult mice from Rodent Pro... with the idea of feeding each of my ferrets one a day. And now I added $50 every 3 months for litter assuming I go with Worlds Best. And then I added $50 a month in raw food costs for my ferrets combined.
I didn't realize it would be so crazy expensive to own ferrets. I haven't changed my mind... I'm still getting them... but it's a real eye opener.

And that hasn't even started with vet bills. They are IMO the biggest and scariest expensive of all.
