Hi everyone. Sorry I've been MIA but pregnancy has pretty much kept me asleep when not at school.
Anyway. In preparation for the little one to come, we cleaned out the furbie room (which will now also be our bedroom) and created a playspace around their cage with two 8 panel Marshall's playpens. I laid out plastic carpet liner underneath and placed a remnant carpet on top of the liners for traction (and to keep them from burrowing under the plastic).
That was three weeks ago. Everything was going swimmingly until last night. During an unsupervised playtime we were surprised to see our smallest, Pita, come running through out feet during dinnertime. We put her back in the playpen and found that she had figured out that one of joints wasn't being held together at the bottom with the rod and could push her way through. We fixed that.
After this morning's playtime, we left them to catch ZZZ's but didn't put them back in their cage. Again, Pita shows up announced. Turns out she found another weak spot, in a panel this time, that she can push apart and get out. Unfortunately, 3-4 panels on that side have been slightly compromised because hubby tripped in the dark and sorta crushed the sides down. It's no immediately obvious but easy enough for her to slip through several points in the different panels.
Now that she knows these points exist, she's obsessed with digging at the fencing until she can squeeze her head through and then her body.
I've been using the play area as an extension of their cage and only locking them in their cage ant night/when we're out but we can't do that if she can get out. I can replace the panels with a new playpen, but I'm worried she just going to do it again.
Any ideas on how we can deter/prevent this behavior?
