We finally started building my reptile shelves! I've been wanting them forever, especially to build a bigger enclosure for my boa, and we finally got around to doing them now and I'm just so excited! The part closest to the floor is going to have a plexi-glass sliding door, and we will build the walls all around it, and have my boa in that area. The rest will just be for my other reptile tanks. I attempted to start painting it but my cat was pawing at the brush so I had to put it off until tomorrow morning. We also have another shelf to put all the way at the top. It still looks like a mess right now. Both 12x12 exo terra tanks will have tarantulas in each. (I'm looking into getting another once I start working). The 10 gallon has my leopard gecko. The 15 gallon will be housing a small snake. And the two 40 gallons underneath will have my american toad (who is currently in the 15g) and the other has my cornsnake. Would anyone have any suggestions for a snake that could live in a 15 gallon? I was thinking of getting a milksnake but I'm still not sure. I would just love something other than a cornsnake that eats well and won't be too much maintenance. And also this picture was too cute not to share. The downstairs group of my ferts were watching us build the shelves and standing in a line the entire time. It was the cutest

Awesome! We have a similar shelf system my husband built upstairs for our snakes and geckos in exo-terra terrariums. I even had some paint left over from our trim so that it matches. It's so nice to have everything in one spot and looking like it belongs there!
15 gallons is pretty small for even an adult corn snake. It'd be fine for some snake hatchlings and juvis, but you'd have to upgrade eventually. Our Nelson's Milk Snake is in a 24" x 24" terrarium.
And the ferret pic is absolutely precious...!

Yeah I figured out the 15 would be too small for a cornsnake. It can house a milksnake, garter snake, kingsnake, hognose and I can't remember the rest. But instead of using the 15 gallon, I was thinking of simply using my 40 gallon and getting either a snake or reptile in there. I'm very undecisive on which one right now and I've been researching a couple now but still not sure. I was thinking maybe a phased ball python, bearded dragons, but mostly I'm leaning on the idea of a rainbow boa or a small tortoise.

Get a hognose for your little tank! I'm dying to get an albino one of these days, they are so stinkin cute! A rainbow boa would be awesome for your larger tank too though, you thinking brazilian or columbian? I really like those too but worry about keeping humidity up in the winter here.

I have a toad in my 15 gallon though, the only extra tank apart from the big one is my 12x12 exo terra but I don't think it would be big enough for a hognose. I've really fallen for snakes though, I'll start working once I get my schedule for school, and I'm going to buy some new tanks so I could have more snakes. And I'm thinking brazilian rainbow boa. From what I've seen, the columbian has less of a coloring and I just love the rainbow colors.

A boa would be too big for a 40g.

I read that a 40 gallon is fine for a rainbow boa though, and I'm planning on putting in branches in the tank too so it can climb around to give it even more room. Basic requirements for them are 40-50 so it should be fine.

A 40g for a boa would be really small. Survivable? Maybe. But the snake would be LOTS happier in a bigger enclosure.

Those are some pretty snakes, I'd love one one day. Snake math can be more dangerous than ferret math because snakes are just so darn Easy! ;D
