Hey guys. My names Luke I live in Australia about an hours north of Sydney. I've been looking and reading a lot the past few weeks both on this and the older forum. Finally decided to jump in and interact with you guys. I currently have 1 fixed male ferret named Bruce who is about 10 months old, currently half way through treating him for mange mites and the disgusting foot rot! These forums and reading through the mentoring programs and benefits of a raw diet have encouraged me to switch Bruce to a natural raw diet. Started today with a chicken soup Got a nice new cage which is exactly like the FN 142 (except Australia's version) and am looking to add a baby girl in with Bruce in a couple of months all going well with the breeding season. Thought I'd say hi anyways. Cheers.

Hi and welcome on board, Luke and Bruce Please feel free to prowl around check out thread, read and ask questions. Your wee one has some serious immune issues, poor wee thing. I hope he gets well soon. I don't think I've ever seen foot rot on a ferret before, what happened to the little one? ciao

Hi, and welcome to the forum! Poor wee boy, that's terrible He's got himself a good home now, though Please, make yourself at home here, and when your little Bruce is feeling better, we'd LOVE to see some pictures of him. I've never heard of a ferret with foot rot, either- how awful for him!

Cheers everyone. Yeah apparently a side effect from the mites and eventually grows on there face and is virtually a death sentence if left untreated. He's slowly making progress though I got him off my brothers friend at work when he was roughly 5 months old. The vet who is treating him seems to think he already had them when I got him and they've just picked their moment a few months later to show themselves. When he is back looking like a healthy ferret he should be I'll get some pictures up.

Hi and welcome! I'm glad your little buddy is getting better! If you don't mind I'd be interested in seeing pictures of the foot rot. I haven't heard of it before either poor boy. But (if you don't mind) I'd like to add the pics Ito our medical section in case anyone else comes across this.

Pics are blurry, but yeah, I can see the problem. Paw pads are bright red, and those nails look horrible! They are so thick, poor mite. Once you are able to get them cut, I imagine he'll feel a bit better, too.

Its all growths around his nails. Starting to fall off though, front paws are nearly better, though the back are improving, have a bit to go yet.

Yeah weirdly enough, the nails have increased in size themselves a touch, then growths connected to his toes and they'd usually encapsulate the nail itself. One nail fell out when the growth fell off, a couple have been bent by the growth, nasty stuff. Slowly getting there though, I can't wait for him to have normal nails! I look at everyone elses pics with nice nails in envy!! Cheers

Poor baby. My Minion has some deformed nails. We're not sure what happened they're horrible looking now (I should update his thread and show others). I think I'm going to have to have the vet look at them and tell me how I can care for them. They're actually growing up and to the side. Unfortunately, they're also solid (you can't see the quick). I hope your wee one soon gets nice, new strong nails. Don't worry, a lot of our wee ones on here have various ailments and problems. ciao

Yeah so I've read. Poor fuzzs. I'm happy and lucky he is still young, we can get rid of these stupid mites and put him on raw for hopefully a good long term healthy life for him. Glad I read into the benefits and the ease of changing his diet instead of him growing and living on kibble. Always did have my doubts about the kibble.
