We use a spray called simple green, it is non toxic and does not seem to affect the ferrets smell, and of course we wash our ferrets' bedding in the washer:)

Personally I can't stand the smell of vinegar. It makes my husband gag. To me the smell of old meat, urine and feces is NOT neutralized or made better by vinegar. I know it's supposed to clean well, but I have a hard time trusting it to work 100%. I've been using what we use in the animal hospital where I work, its called Odo-Ban. You can usually get it at Sams, but if you check their website out they tell you where else to get it. It is sold in gallons and you can mix it to any strength based on your needs; just deodorizing, antiviral, antibacterial, etc. I usually get the ferrets out, clean all solid waste out of the cage, then spray that and let it dry before letting the ferrets back in. Of course, any antiviral or antibacterial has to be allowed to air-dry, not be wiped dry, to kill germs. It has a fresh smell, not floral, and isn't overpowering (as long as you follow the directions and don't mix it too strong.) I have used it on the carpet but it is NOT good for removing stains. Just smells and germs. It is really REALLY good at removing bad odors. I've used that stuff in the bathroom and also on a shower curtain that was in my parents garage and reeked of gas, racing fuel, and... etc... and it took the smells right out. Good stuff. www.odoban.com/

I use clorox anywhere hard surface spray. Kills 99.9% bacteria including salmonella and e coli. It states that it is safe to use on childrens toys and pet bowls. Every time I use it on the kitchen counter, our older cat thinks she has to roll on the counter and lick it. She has never gotten sick from it. I use it in the ferrets feeding den. Website is: www.clorox.com

I also use vinegar and water. I think it works pretty well to eliminate urine/feces smells, but I was using a 3-1 (water/vinegar) mix so seeing others using half and half I might do that instead. When I do my raw feedings I just give them a plate I take out later so I haven't had to think about that one.

If mine actually left food ON the dish, cage wouldn't get so nasty all the time ;D

I've been using a steam cleaner on the ferret's cage recently and its brilliant. Cleans really well and sanitises without chemicals so I don't have to worry about rinsing or drying. It also deodorises their bedding really well, in between washes.
