I was just wondering what everyone uses to clean up after their ferrets? I currently use vinegar diluted with water because I know it is safe. Now that I am starting to feed raw I am unsure if this is sufficient or not.

I like natures miracle, it cleans well. Feeding areas and food bowls I use diluted bleach and dry thoroughly.

Nature's Miracle isn't antibacterial, if that's what you're looking for, but it does great to eliminate pet odors. Along the lines of the OP question, what about fumes? Anything I clean with has an odor including vinegar. Do we have to be concerned about the fumes of even vinegar?

hmm...that's interesting; I've always used vinegar without even thinking about the fumes. 6 years of use and I haven't had an issue (granted I've never left my ferrets in a confined space soon after cleaning with it, either, but). They used to have a really odd desire to DRINK it, but as they got older they outgrew that fascination, thank god).

I personally like natures miracle as well, according to my fiancee the ferret one smells funny when it makes contact with ferret urine + carpet. I have yet to notice this, but when my old apartment flooded (the flood didnt reach the living room where most pee was) and the property manager came in she said that it smelled of 'pet damage' due to 'defication and urination' SO i dont reccomend that if ur in an apartment, lol. In our new apartment they have a bedroom and I have plastic carpet protectors down that I clean with some thing I get at wal-mart and dont remember the name of. It smells good, is supposed to be used to train puppies, and if I leave it on for 5-6 mins it will make diarrhea (from eatting too many organs) wipe up easily. When there are carpet issues I use the stuff made by bissell for their carpet scrubbers to clean up pet stains on carpet. I 1-2 parts that stuff to 3-4 parts water and scrub the areas, it works for me. Be it wiping the plastic down or scrubbing carpet, I always clean with windows open and/or remove the fuzz (depending on how much there is to clean/how much cleaner is used) from the room until the smell is no longer strong (if enough was used to leave that 'cleaner' smell) Every few months I take the big cage and clean it peice by peice in diluted bleach early on a saturday morning and by late sat pm I'll put it back in their room.

Yeah I use natures miracle for carpets, but I was wondering if vinegar would kill salmonella and e coli. I never thought about the fumes with vinegar either! Good question.

Vinegar is a pretty effective antibacterial. I also use the Green Works all purpose cleaner.

I use vinegar and water. If I want or need an antibacterial I set up a peroxide and water mix. I then spray one, wipe and then spray the other and wipe. If you check it out, it's carries the highest ranking for antibacterial cleaning. Higher than most of the chemically charged antibacterials. ciao

I use 50/50 vinegar/water for almost everything. It's nontoxic, antibacterial, and cleans really well.

I use Green Works cleaner most of the time. Nature's Miracle was good too. I actually want to switch to vinegar in water since it's cheap and natural.

I have very young children so Im scared to use chemicals. When I am cleaning the cage and litter boxes I use my steam cleaner. It only uses water. I can clean the whole cage with it in about 15mins. My cage looks bran new.

Didn't even realize a steam cleaner would work with a cage!
