I figured I should introduce myself since I've been creeping about for 3 weeks and plan to be here as long as the forum is. My name is Tasha, I'm twenty one and from, North Dakota. I use to work at a pet store and take the ferrets home with me at nights / Sundays when closed to keep them safe. I "fostered" a few different ones in high school but have never been owned by a ferret before. I'm looking into getting on the first week or two in September so joined here to get as much information as I could. I had no idea raw feeding was such a big thing and could help so much with health. After I get my fuzzbutt (and let my fiance get used to her) I plan to switch it to raw feeding and am glad you have a mentoring program here!

Hi there! Welcome, glad you could join us!! If you get a kit, switching sooner is better. Not only will it be easier to switch with a kit but you wont have to go through the 'detox period' where poops can tend to be more... well, um.. suffocating (at least Kahlua and Mojitos were) and having a neat freak fiancee myself, I know how difficult it can be for him to ignore the smell. Infact, 90% of the time I smelled nothing while he swore it reeked. Not that I'm knocking adoption.. I adopted Kahlua and Mojito and while another member and I fostered 2 ferrets to my friends due to their personal issues, im taking on the two fosters and one of my moms ferrets that she gave to them and I am now going to keep forever. (Basically, by this time tomorrow I will have my 3 + a new addition who is basically adopted I guess lol and two fosters) I am all for adoption, the only one of my fuzz who isnt adopted is SoCo but I wanted Kahlua and Mojito to pick him out themselves and wow, im ranting lol. Welcome to the board, no matter how you aquire your ferret there are tons of helpful people on here and mentors, who will be happy to help you through your wonderful journey together

Thanks everyone!
I'm not *entirely* sure if I'll be adopting or getting a kit yet. There's a pet store here in town that sells locally breeded(sp?) ferrets and ferrets that other people have "dropped off." I'll be going there a few times and I'll pick whichever one I think suits me and I suit best.
My fiance, Nick, is already a little skeptical of me getting a ferret in the first place and during my first mention of raw feeding he became a little squirmish, so I definitely want to give him time to get use to having one in the first place! I'll be sure to post pictures as soon as I get one!

Look into freeze dried raw. It is expensive, but feeding only one shouldn't be that bad. It looks a lot like kibble. I love Stella and Chewys.

Hi and welcome on board Great idea, researching before really getting involved...please read through threads, ask questions, get involved in the discussions. Everyone's friendly, so remember no question is stupid, only not asking it is I've seen you around, I hope that you will continue to participate and have fun, they're a great group here ciao

One thing that may convince your bf. Raw fed ferrets have FAR less musky odour than kibble fed

Sherry, I've told him that and we've talked more and he's becoming more comfortable with it. I'm sure by the time we get our ferret, he'll be all for it! I'll probably sign up for mentoring once I get one!

Also, go to "medical", then "insulinoma", then the "observations" article by Bob Church. It's in the stickies section. If reading that doesn't convince him- nothing will!

He's definitely all for it now. He didn't read it, apparently that's "not his thing," But I told him about it haha.
