So as many of you know I have been riding a little QH mare named Doc's Shadow for the last year. And unfortunately (as I posted earlier) she was recently sold, leaving me horseless. Well I have been checking CL daily (with the exception of when I was out of town) and there was nothing. Then all of a sudden I found something! A woman owns 2 horses that she is looking to lease. One Arabian, and one QH. I am going to go meet her tonight after work! I am soo excited! And Nervous! I REALLY hope that we can work something out. I can't afford the price she is asking for the lease, but I am hoping we can work out a smaller lease (like maybe 1 day a week) or a work-trade or something along those lines. I really really hope that the Arabian works out (I loove Arabians but I'm not a huge fan of QH - though a QH is better than no horse!) but I am open to both. Wish me luck!

Good luck- and if it were me, I'd be going for the QH. Much more stable temperment IME ;D But this is coming from what has degraded into a relatively nervous rider

haha Thanks guys! The stable is really nice. No indoor ring though darn. Gotta love the Alaskan cold! Arg! Anyways, the little mare is half Arabian - half Baskhir Curly Horse. She is a little different looking, but very cute. I am going out on Monday to ride her and see how we click. I managed to talk the owner down quite a bit, but still not quite the price I wanted. It's a little bit more than I can really afford, but it's still Really close to what I was looking for. It means I will have to forgo getting lessons, BUT the owner is willing to work with me a bit, so that balances things out. I probably shouldn't strain my budget, but horses are my childhood dream. (Yes, I was one of THOSE girls - you know, the ones who were downright obsessed? Yup that's me all the way ). Once Med School starts it will be YEARS until I can do any regular riding again, so I Really do NOT want to pass up my chance to live my dream for a year, even if it means things will be a little tighter money wise. I will be working a little more this fall, which is coming up sooner than I'd like (ohh sunshine how we will miss you!) so that will make a big difference. And once the Des implant comes in I'll practically be rolling in dough from the money I'll save on monthly injections! ;D Anyways, Guilty pleasure indeed, but I am so taking it! haha As an added bonus, I'll get to go on trail rides with the owner free (so trail rides separate from the 1 day/week lease would be included) AND the owner said that when my Mom comes to town (she's really into horses too) she could ride the QH. They both (horses) ride English, Western, and Bareback and do Jumping! Yaaaaayyy! (I have wanted to do jumping for a loong time). Oh and her name is Deshka and the QH's name is Earl.

I am sill young and daring! I want a little spirit in the horse I ride - I like a challenge. As long as the horse LISTENS. And it would be hard to find a horse more stubborn than Shadow was. She was a good horse but I'm convinced she was half mule. It would take 30 min just to bridle her and another 30 to clean her feet. Then half of my riding time would be spent trying to haul her away from the gate because she had decided it was dinner time.

Try a 15 year old mare who was fine going in one direction around the paddock(still getting used to her), and when I tried to get her going the other way, reared straight up(I'm used to riding western. Had an English saddle on at the time, you can imagine what happened ;D ). After I got up from the dirt, I got right back on with a switch in hand(only thing that worked was the threat of one) when she took the bit in her teeth and bolted. I'd forgotten to retighten the cinch Got up from the dirt yet again, tried my friend's stallion. After the rodeo, I decided on his appie QH to ride instead. Oh yeah- in case I forgot to mention- these other two were Arabian crosses ;D

Hahahaha ;D That sucks. And, well...you try an ARABIAN STALLION..no wonder! ;D Well nothing is settled yet but I will be riding her on Monday! My Mom's response was... "Arabians and Baskhirs are both hot tempered horses...." haha Yuup! But PRETTY horses! It sounds like she is a little spooky but has not bucked or reared or bolted yet - just dancing around, or coming to a complete and sudden stop when she spooks. I think I'd prefer bolting to sudden stops though personally. We'll see... Other than that though, she saddles and bridles easy, stands nicely for you to mount, jumps easy, and is a nice mare. From what I have been told.

She sounds like a beauty And having experienced both- I prefer the sudden stop to the taking the bit in the teeth and bolting ;D Don't get me wrong- I adore the looks of the Arabian! They truly are amazing horses for those who are more experienced than I am.

Oh do I miss horseback riding. I used to ride western style and bareback at my Aunt's ranch, and even took English style lessons for a little bit when I was younger. I still can if I wanted to (it would just require a trip up to San Antonio and for my aunt to not be busy, which is NEVER : . Also, I took a long break after losing my horse (his name was Dock... a very huge male with white hair and brown freckles everywhere ). He was staying at another ranch temporarily while my aunt was transferring them all over to a new ranch. The people taking care of him put him in the same pen as a bull. I'm sure you can guess what happened I wish you luck on this venture... horses are amazing creatures who LOVE working ;D They are so powerful, yet have the ability to be tamed by mere mankind

Good Luck!! I am in the beginning stages of considering a horse- I need a volunteer job working with them to learn first though. I only took riding lessons, never had any of the care tasks so I have a lot to learn. I met a Gypsy Cobb I absolutely fell in love with and cannot get him out of my mind, but the responsibility is something I need to research first (AND the grooming!!!) You must be very excited!! Again, good luck and let us know how it goes

Ferretsroogies I could not agree more. Horses are magical! Anr Suzie good luck! When I get on my computer I'll post a link to a great forum for you. If you want to google it thought it's Horse Grooming Supplies Forum. HGS is just the company/website that runs it you can find all things horsey there. I have always had the opposite problem from you. I've had a fair bit of experience working with horses (and a LOT of practice on my toy ponies! ) and as a kid I read endless books on horse care. While that was a long time ago I'm still pretty familiar with the basics of care, though not enough to own a horse. I def have some learning in regards to teeth floating, medical care, and farrier care. But for riding my risky experience grisly up was VERY hodgepodge. I've had a fair bit of time on top of a horse, but not too many Actual lessons. And as a kid I was so small I struggled with the tack and so I usually had help. When I first started riding Shadow I was a little nervous about tacking to begin with but it's not as hard as it looks. lol Then for riding it's like...I don't have a lot of technical knowledge. I can get up and go and stay on and control the horse just fine. I can stick on the saddle and other than a bad habit of not poinig my heels enough I have a pretty good seat. But I don't know all of the exercises I can do. Shadow's owner suggested itry serpentines and I was like... What are those? She told me and it's like OOOHHH ok yeah I know how to do that, but I never had a clue what it was called. haha So yeah my knowledge of certain things is a little gappy. Thqts the great thing abou life though is you never stop learning!
