So I have my hamster's food in one of those plastic cereal containers, with the flip-top. It seals perfectly. So today I was going to go refill Matty's food dish, and I pulled out a cup of food and was SHOCKED. There were bugs everywhere!! They're flea-sized, a reddish-brown color, and both mite-sized juveniles and larvae also were in there. What are they?! How did they get in there if the cereal container is sealed?! I threw away the food and got more but..I'm still so surprised!

The food could have came with bugs in it - try freezing it for 24 hours after buying it - it is to kill any eggs left by bugs - I think.

I have seen this fairly often, I have heard freezing helps as well. We get a different bug in bird seed, freezing seems to work.

It is from the eggs that are in the feed prior to packing/shipping. And yes, freezing should do the trick.
