So yesterday out of the blue Bf says he'd like to take part of our backyard and give the girls an outdoor enclosure! It would be for when the weather gets cooler but I am pretty excited We have a fence, so I was thinking of putting chicken wire up around the existing fence. I guess I'd need to dig up all the grass an dirt and put wire down underneath the enclosure? Any ideas about what size is good? What about easy roof ideas? I'd like to be able to stand up in it

A easy room is possible finding a free metal frame used for canopys or garages. You could build a 2 x4 frame and line everything with wire. Google avarie!

dont use chicken wire! Ferrets can, will, and Have chewed and pulled their way through this type of wire. You need welded mesh.
the base needs to be concrete or dug under to a good depth.
size wise... i always say to make it as big as you can.. that way you always have room to add more ferrets without costly renovating.
you also might want to put plastic sheeting or plexiglas type stuff in a panel about 12- 18 inches wide all around the entire thing at about 3-4 ft high to prevent falls when they climb the mesh.

As far as digging, I'm not sure they could actually dig their way out anywhere. There is a ton of rock and limestone just a couple inches under the grass/dirt. Even if they could climb the mesh, we have a 6 ft tall privacy fence that the mesh would be put up against I don't think I have any concerns there.

I have not made an outdoor enclosure YET! But when I have a yard and/or available room, I plan on making something out of plexiglass. Or acrylic plastic stuff. I have been plotting and thinking about it for a while now. I figure you could make it any size you like as long as you have all the material. and i figure the acrylic sheets are pretty easy to work with. I was thinking of just making a large box and filling it with about 2 feet of soil and then adding other toys. Another thing you could do is, look up Out door Aviaries for pet parrots. There are many websites dedicated to outdoor aviaries. they are pretty expensive if you buy them already made, but if you blue-printed the measurements you wanted and got material i amsure it wouldnt cost you more than $100-$200 depending on material and size. But yeah...if you want something they cant get out of and you can walk into, looking up Aviary ideas is my suggestion. Birds are just as sneaky as ferrets, plus they can be smaller! and smarter! When you get to it, be sure to post pictures so we can all see how it comes out Good Luck1!!!
