It's been really hit or miss for me. My oldest rattie lived to be over five years old. She was my heart rattie, her name was Big Rat (originally something else, but I can't even remember what it was now ) and she was the only rat I ever bred. She's also one of two rats out of the hundred or so that I've owned that actually died of old age. I have high hopes for my Anni-bear (touch wood) On the other hand, I've had a couple of ratties that have developed various forms of cancer and had to be put down before reaching a year old Though, unless advised otherwise by the vet, I ALWAYS am willing to pay for surgeries or other necessary medical procedures as soon as they are needed even for "just" rats, which might have something to do with my rat's tendency towards longevity. My average for my rattie girls has seemed to be around three years old

Beautiful family!!! My baby sister had a pet rat Sniffles (feeder rat from a reptile store). She lived around 4-5 years (don't know exactly). She was an amazing animal and my sister loved her dearly they do make great pets She would sit on my sisters shoulder while she brushed her teeth, and wait for the bus with her. She passed about a year ago.

Thanks guys! I'll be sure to pass on to the ratties that they are admired I got my first rat at summer camp when I was five, when one of the councelors brought them in and said she needed a home for them. I volunteered and brought them home without asking my mom But she took one look and said I could keep them, she's as bad as I am, lol. Since we lived in apartments, they were all I could have until I was twelve and started working to lease my own pony. I took them EVERYWHERE with me (the store, school if I could get away with it, on walks) and they were fabulous companions. The only reason that I've moved away from them and towards ferrets and dogs is their small size. I'm very active, and it's just harder to take rats on adventures safely
