Bellah, our one-year-old chinese crested/boston terrier cross. She is sweet, playful, and just plain silly. She loves her "skunky" and making wookie noises. Trevor, our 5 yr old chihuahua mix. We think he might be a chug(chihuahua/pug cross). He loves to kiss on the lips, be in your lap constantly. He's a lover. Angel, our 2 yr old long-haired black kitty. She just walked into our home one day! She is my soul-cat. I love her so much. Freedom, our 4 year old, mostly neurotic and occasionally an a**hole gray tabby cat: And lastly, our crowntail betta fish, Albus Dumblefish: His 5g tank: Our live plants are starting to grow.

Bella looks so much like our Maggie did. Gorgeous babies, as always! And bettas are the best, ever since I had my first, Siam, I've fallen in love with them! Maybe one of these days I'll get my act together and get another one

Beautiful pets! I'm especially happy to see Albus in a heated/filtered larger tank...so many people don't know bettas are tropical and really thrive in clean, warm water and really show their personalities when they have space to explore, I got into so many arguments with customers when I worked in a pet store about that...just because the stores keep them in cups to prevent fighting and they can tolerate it does not mean it's what they belong in for life! My Cassanova adores his live plants, he rests on the leaves and hides in them all the time, darting out if we walk by to beg for food .

Yeah, that's how everyone keeps them. In itty bitty little cups. It's pretty terrible

That's so sad Are they easy to keep? Do they have to be the only fish in a tank?

Depends on the betta and the other fish, some are more aggressive than others, but their long fins make them kind of slow so other fish can easily pick on them too. I've successfully kept them with other community fish in the past (like tetras), though my current one is a bully and stresses himself out flaring his gills at everyone. The main rules of thumb are nothing else with flashy fins (like fancy male guppies) that remind them of another male betta, nothing that's going to try and eat their fins, and no other bettas, male or female. Sometimes females can live together, but they need a lot of space and hiding places because they'll create a pecking order and can still get vicious. And even following those guidelines some need to stay solo...so it's just far easier/cheaper for petstores to keep them in cups than worry about them getting torn up in the other tanks. Trippy, I really love Freedom's coloration! I don't think I've seen a gray tabby with butterscotch markings like that, and he looks super-soft

I know! I hate to see Bettas in little cups or bowls. They can't possibly be happy. Just because they can survive those kinds of conditions, doesn't mean they should. I like having a 5 gallon tank for my betta, he is so happy in it and plus, you don't get much decorating space with one of those bowls. They need a place to hide, but they also like plants to rest against. Plus, in this 5g tank, I don't have to do daily water changes like you would have to with a bowl or cup. He doesn't make much of a mess at all, and cycling his tank was a breeze. He has been a real easy keeper, doesn't eat but a few pellets a day so his food lasts forever. The only thing I have to really worry about is changing his filter once a month or so, and those are pretty cheap. I don't have to buy water conditioner all the time either, one bottle of Prime lasts forever! Thanks everyone for the nice compliments!
