Hello! I am a long time lurker and now a first time poster. I have had 4 ferrets their whole lives and love them to death!
My oldest are now 6 and one of them has adrenal. He has had the implant for about 2 weeks and about a week ago he began to have weakness in his back legs and ran a fever up to 107. I rushed him to the emergency vet and everything came back great. Liver and kidney function was good, fever went back down with fluids, blood glucose was at 88 after fasting (I was there a long time waiting so he was too) and only a slight elevation in his white blood cell count. We put him on antibiotics and pain meds and he's doing a lot better. He is alert and playful, eating normally but still not using his back legs.
When I spoke to his regular vet he told me that sometimes when you put the implant into a ferret with adrenal it can cause almost "menopause" like symptoms due to the estrogen being brought down. All of that makes sense but I'm wondering if he will get his strength in his back legs back or will he stay this way forever? He's using his legs more but still dragging a bit, and is able to hold himself up while urinating again, and today he played with a toy and used his back legs a bit.
If he's like this forever, I need to change his cage. I have had my ferrets in 2 Kaytee ferret cages (the purple bigger one) stacked on each other and secured together. We modified it over time and I know to get a FN now but I don't want to stress them out changing cages, he just can't navigate his ferret mansion/tower like he used to. How do I change cages?

Great job on getting him fixed up. Changing cages isn't going to stress them out, they will be happier all around, and so will you! However he sounds like his back legs are getting better for now. Another option is setting him up in a Marshall's playpen for one level living.

I currently have him in a pop up playpen, and today he is using about 80 percent of his legs and kicking me when I hold him as ferrets will do! He is also playing with his bonded partner again and toys again, but I still will be getting that cage because I know it's better for them as they age especially!

Welcome. the adrenal implant does take time to work. I hope your fuzz continues to improve with the antibiotics
