I hate that I have to write this because I thought it won't be til my ferret will be old. He's only 3 years (name is Raven). My husband and I have 6 ferrets, Arro, Ravens' brother died last Friday at 4 pm. We took him to the emergency vet Thursday night. He died from ECE. He had it severely since he was a kit. We didn't know that til we found out. We adopted them both from a couple who couldn't give them the full care they need. Arro made 7 ferrets in total. We love and adore them all the same. We took Raven to our regular fantastic vet clinic yesterday to get him fully checked and tested for ECE. One of the ferrets doctors will call me tonight sometime after 8 with his results. All my ferrets are on raw. The first 5 were extremely easy to switch but Raven and Arro being 3 and 2 years were super hard but I did it. I did it super slow with them. They were doing fantastic on it. They were gaining weight, their fur was getting softer and softer every week. They got lots of free time (all of them get 8 or more hours a day everyday). But since last Saturday Raven lost a lot of weight. I'm super devastated and worried for him. I told my husband this morning that I think it's because he's being quarantined from his siblings for everything. For now I alternate freedom times for him and his siblings until hes cleared. He and Arro loved being with their siblings, doing everything with them, that includes eating. I could tell that they felt safe eating with them. I bought the Ziwi Peak dry cat food and the Critical Carnovore Care dry food too, they will be here next Thursday. It's to help him gain weight back. The vet didn't say to switch foods but I have a feeling as dows my husband that for now Raven needs the boost with these foods. I don't know what else to do for him while he's in isolation from his siblings. After every handling from both sides of the ferrets we wash our hands, I wash their dishes, I have always cleaned their cage three times a day thoroughly as well as washed their dishes everyday. Beddingabd toys get washed once a week. We take them outside, they all are extremely energetic as well as extremely cuddly with us and with each other. And after Raven is done with his freedom I sanitize the whole house and everything he touched before my other ferrets out for freedom. Last night from 3 til 6:30 I slept with him in our bathroom because I had a feeling he needed me to. That's where we're keeping him when he's not out. Cam someone tell me what to do for Ravens' weight gain and so he keeps the weight on? It looks asit did for Arro where he was eating but keeping the weight on because of the virus and I'm praying that that's not happening to Raven. The doctor said most of the time ferrets recover from it and they are back to their normal and healthy selves, that includes gaining weight and keeping it on. I think that's it.
I held Arro while he was being euthanized and that was horrible to see. I jumped and yelled a little when the vet she told us that he's gone after the drug finished going in him.
