Hello ferret family I am a first time poster and excited to be a part of this community. My husband and I have 3 ferrets in our family and we adore them. We have been having some trouble with 2 of them getting along and I was wondering if anyone has any advice on how to bring harmony to our busyness.
Background: We first adopted a bonded pair, Snoopy and Lilith. These two are as thick as thieves. They are both about 2 years and 6 months in age. These two will have a blast playing and running around the house but my sweet Lilith loves her naps and Snoopy ends up playing by himself sometimes. He seemed bored while sweet Lilith naps on the couch so we decided to grow our ferret family when we saw a young male in need of a furever home. He is about 6-9 months in age. We adopted our new ferret into our home (he still needs a name, but for now let's call him Sharkie). Sharkie needed some time to adjust to kind humans and he has really settled into the life of domestication in the one month we have had him. He loves to play with Lilith, they really wear each other out.
The Issue: Snoopy hates Sharkie. The moment they are next to each other Snoopy goes into what I describe as "predator mode". His only focus is to tackle Sharkie and fight him. I have read that ferrets play rough and to follow the "no pee no poo no blood" rule but poor Sharkie pees and poos himself every time Snoopy grabs hold of him. He has not bled but I did find one shallow puncture hole on the back of his neck once. Snoopy really seems to zone in on him the moment he sees him.. I swear his entire demeanor changes. What is strangest to me is that they all got along marvelously for about 48 hours. We have photos of them cuddling and playing but then suddenly they had one nasty fight and it changed everything. To remedy this situation I have tried holding the boys at the same time to get them used to each other, I have tried to monitor them playing but it usually results in a fight very quickly. So now we just have them in separate cages and they get to play separately, which works fine but of course we would rather them all be able to play together and have fun, especially since we partly got Sharkie for Snoopy to play with.
Does anyone have any suggestions for us? Is it possible that Snoopy will never like Sharkie? Do some ferrets just not accept others? Snoopy is incredibly attached to myself. He smothers me with kisses non stop when I hold him and he doesn't do that with my husband, is it possible the problem is me and that Snoopy has become territorial over myself? I am not sure if ferrets become territorial over their owners. Maybe it would help if my husband was the one who tries to get these two trouble makers to be friends? I am sorry for the long-winded post, friends. Any tips would be appreciated and thank you again for having us here.
