Hello again!
I'm in a bit of a pickle with one of my ferrets that i've posted a little about lately. I just got the results back from his cytology report but it's just left me more confused.
He we've been treating for adrenal with DES Implant since November 2022.
April 11th he's gained weight, pooping blood, crying when going potty, frequent attempts. I take him to the vet his Fecal test was clear, there's a mass, vet thinks the mass is causing the discomfort so we schedule surgery on the 4th of May to remove it. Vet prescribes .5 mg metronidazole and Pepto-Bismol but I never gave him the Pepto.
April 25th I bring him back to the vet because he feet are swollen and scared from him chewing at them I guess, and the tip of his tail turning black. Now he has more tumors throughout his body and fluid build up and they no longer feel surgery is a good idea but we can still do it to get an idea what's going on inside if I want. We order a cytology and they prescribe Silvadene for his wounds, .3 mg Gabapentin for pain, and .15 mg Prednisone for the Tumors (I will request Prednisolone in our next visit). (The blood in poop did stop)
Since then he's been crying less when going potty but it's not consistent if he does or doesn't, he's been active in terms of being able to walk around and climb if he must, still eating well, but his tail has had little improvement but I guess it's not getting worse? His feet look better, but I noticed scars in his mouth I don't know if that's new or not, and a rash on his bottom jaw. While he's not the worst still seems a bit pitiful I wouldn't call him comfortable.
May 1st we get the results from the cytology: The cytology findings are consistent with sampling of uniform epithelial tissue, and given the location, this could represent tissue from the mammary gland. Considering the mammary gland swelling described in the history, hyperplasia (e.g. due to hyperestrogenism) is a possibility. The cells, although predominantly not intact, appear uniform and therefore, neoplasia is considered less likely but cannot be completely ruled out. In some areas of the smears, the cells have almost a neuroendocrine appearance and if a disseminated neoplastic process if of high clinical concern, histopathology of this mass is recommended. There is no overt evidence of infection and/or inflammation on the smears.
SO the vet thinks there's not much to gain from surgery but we could still do it to see what's going on inside. I don't really want to put him through that if there's not much to gain though? They say we can remove the original mass but by doing that it could promote the other tumors to grow in it's place. And I just don't know what to do?
I'm leaning towards no surgery but I just don't know what that means for him now? Has anyone else experienced this situation or have any advice? I know it's all ultimately up to me and the vets but if there's any outside input I'd love to hear it.
