Just in case anyone needs a page for this, I don't know if it exists yet, but here are some tips for when you can't yet go to the vet and your ferret seems to be poisoned by eating drugs, rat poisons, toxic plants, or more
Hope this helps!
1
Give activated charcoal (found at any pharmacy) and plenty of water. A detoxifying clay like zeolite or bentonite can be useful. It's non-toxic, but the regular dose is 1-3g per kg of weight.
Tip: Open the pills and mix charcoal dust with water as a paste. You can give this with salmon oil.
For a regular 1kg ferret (2 lbs) , 3-10 pills can be given. If your ferret weighs double, you can give up to 20 pills (as paste, not in the actual pills)
2
Since the charcoal binds to the toxins, give a laxative to help flush the toxins out of the system faster. Your ferret may have black poop because of the dark color of the charcoal and it may be runny.
Tip: Do not use laxatives if your ferret was already dehydrated or had diarrhea before poisoning.
Options for laxatives:
Magnesium - 1-3 grams diluted with water
Sodium - Give a saline solution or mix 2 cups water to 1 teaspoon salt. Give 5-10 milliliters per kg (a ferret is usually 1 kg)
Canned pumpkin - Give 1-2 tablespoons every 4 hours until the pumpkin is pooped
Vaseline - Give 0.5-1 teaspoons only once, preferably 1 hour after the pumpkin
Milk/ Cream - 1 tablespoon every 4 hours (like pumpkin, this should not be used often or in large doses)
Hairball remedy - given dosage (usually 1-2 milliliters)
3
Induce vomiting through hydrogen peroxide. WARNING: This should only be done if the ferret JUST ate something VERY harmful since this method is also harmful to the ferret and is dangerous to do.
Use 3% hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and give 1/2 teaspoon per kg. Do not dilute the hydrogen peroxide and do not try to do this more than two times. Vomiting will happen within 15 minutes.
Tip: Do not try this method if your ferret has heart issues or recent surgery
If you have any other tips or stories, feel free to reply. Also if you feel there is a better dosage or better advice, please also reply. This is just a collection of online advice for ferrets that I've put together for an easy and fast way to access information in case of an emergency
