I made the heart wrenching decision to send my first ever ferret, Lord Beerus, over the rainbow bridge yesterday. He had lymphoma that had spread throughout his abdomen and was inoperable. I know he is no longer suffering, and he is frolicking in heaven but it still hurts. He would have been 4 on March 27th. He shared my mom’s birthday. I miss him so much but I have the best memories to remember him by. I have his crate mates, Cierra (#2) and Mr. PoPo (#3) who are coping with his absence. I’m at work as I type this thread, wanting to be at home and cuddle with them.
Does it get easier?

Eventually it does, but until then, it hurts like h*ll. I'm so very sorry for your loss.

Thank you for your kind reply, Silentdook. I certainly am experiencing the h*ll right now. I find it best to keep busy and try not to think too long about him, but then I feel guilty. Non-ferret people don’t understand so it’s not like I can glean sympathy from my co-workers. Ugh…

I’m sorry you’re joining us at such a sad time for you. I hope your remaining ferrets are able to comfort you some. It fades in time, but it’ll take a while. Four is very young.

I'm so sorry. I lost Larry to agressive lymphoma around his 4th birthday. I have never disagreed with silentdook, but to me, saying good-bye to 28 ferrets over the years was never easy. It may be easier to make the big decision, but letting go is never easy That's why Lilly and Bobo will be my last. I wish you peace.

Losing Doc, Josie, Jessie, and Wyatt recently as six months past was JUST as hard as losing my first love, Trouble. That wasn't easier, nor where any of them in between. I meant that the heartbreak (individually)at the time of the loss gets easier to carry as time goes by, and we heal with the memories, if I'm making any sense? I sympathise with you, unclejoe, my last two, Pooka and Morticia will also be my last. I'm getting too old myself and my health can't keep up with new ferrets anymore.

I understand. But every time I see pics of Scamp/Booger/Junior (contest photo), I lose it

I'm so sorry. I lost Larry to agressive lymphoma around his 4th birthday. You described the loss of Lord Beerus exactly. By the time we knew something was wrong it was too late. I keep thinking whether my failure to have routine bloodwork performed a few months earlier would have shown the cancer or not.

Larry was treated with prednisone and had 2 abdominal aspirations (fluid drains). The first one contained bilirubins which are produced in the liver, which indicated the lymphoma had gotten there, which was pretty much a death sentence. The second obtained no fluid at all, because the tumors that caused his belly to be so bloated. I got Larry and Frank from a woman who claimed to know a lot about ferrets, but they were living in a cage next to the south side of a trailer, in Florida, where it must have routinely got to over 100F. She started telling me all about what she knew and I told her, I have to get going, just to get them out of there.

Sheesh, I am so glad you were there to be able to rescue Larry and Frank from a misguided owner. Ugh, hopefully she will avoid getting any more ferrets in the future. The names you selected are adorable, btw. My Lord Beerus was named after a Dragonball character. Lord Beerus was the god of destruction - which definitely seems appropriate for a ferret. However, Beerus was more than about destruction; he was our very first ferret and we learned so much from him. He was the leader of our business and all other "employees" looked up to him, as we now lovingly referred to him as the CEO of the business. Cierra, his partner in crime, is our number 2. Together, they figured out how they could scale baby gates with ease, and so began our struggle to find the impenetrable gate - which we did, thanks to Lowe's Home Improvement. Ah, so many fond memories, so little time we had with him.

I was pretty new to ferrets then, but I knew I could do better for them.
