Charlie passed away in my arms at 1:20am Thursday, Feb. 16/23. His health declined very rapidly from the time I took him to the vet on Jan. 3rd and then again on Jan. 11th. The vets had determined he had a mass in his spleen. He was given prednisolone to help shrink the mass and increase his appetite. It seemed to help as his spleen didn’t feel as large once he started on the medication and he began to eat again. But Feb. 15 he didn’t eat enough before I left for work. I left him food as I had always done and it would be gone by the time I got home, but not today. He climbed into my arms when I got home and I held him. I cleaned him and tried to feed him but he wouldn’t eat, not even salmon oil. I held him all night until he passed away.
I did everything I could to give him a long life with a raw diet, DES implants, kept him safe from harm and yet he only lived 5 years, 5 months and 3 days. His life was too short. Charlie didn’t have adrenal disease or insulinoma. Maybe it would have been better to have insulinoma because it seems to be more manageable with medication. Charlie had a very aggressive carcinoma of some kind. He declined incredibly fast from the morning where he was still trotting down the hallway to the bathroom for me to help him into the tub to play in the water and get a drink. By the evening he was stumbling around and couldn’t get to the litter box or puppy pad.
I miss you dearly already, my little buddy.

I’m so sorry. You tried your best, but sometimes it’s out of our control. Rest in peace.

I'm so sorry. You gave him the best life possible. These aggressive cancers are really heartbreaking, I went through that last year with Nefertiti. DIP little Charlie.

Oh, I'm so sorry! It's so very hard when they leave us so quickly and too soon. It amazes me when they climb up onto us for their final hugs, I'm glad you were able to hold him as you said goodbye.

Thank you. It's hard not having him here. I always hear sounds and expect him to come around the corner or climb up on the couch with me for a cuddle. My vet called me the day I took him into the vet. She said she palpated him and said that the mass wasn't present so she believes it had ruptured. That could explain why he deteriorated so quickly from the morning to the evening. I hope to have another one in the very near future. We don't have any in pet stores here, nor do I wish to get one there, but I will be searching to find one.

Condolences on your loss, Charlie was a beautiful boy and you gave him the best life. Unfortunately these guys are prone to so many things, it is hard to ensure a long time with them, the best we can do is love them and enjoy however long they are with us.
I will miss Charlie too
