I’m not sure if my 8 month 3 pound marshal girl Kira is too chubby or if she just has her seasons mixed up because it could be her “first winter” since I’ve heard they gain the most weight their first winter, maybe it is all just winter weight? Her coat is thick, shiny and healthy looking but I’m not sure if it just appears thick because of the extra tub. Tim, my 6 month 2.7 pound Marshall boy is extremely agile, climbing and jumping on everything with what appears to be unlimited energy. Kira doesn’t like to play nearly as much as him and prefers to explore independently, and doesn’t really jump onto things and is just more clumsy than him. If she is feeling extra lazy or she just woke up she sometimes just slides down the ramp from the cage rather than actually walking down it. She does play with him when he gets her going and she’ll run around lots but she tires out somewhat quickly, but I’m not sure if this is just a personality thing where she’s just not a super playful ferret. She was more playful when we got her and she was younger but maybe she’s already grown out of it? They are fed high quality commercial grinds of 6 different proteins and some bones for teeth cleaning. I’ve also heard some overeat on the grinds since it’s easier to eat, and she is a lot more lazy with bones as well. She used to eat larger pieces but now I have to cut them up fairly small otherwise she just stashes them and doesn’t actually eat them.

They take a few years to start slowing down normally. She’s still a “teenager” at eight months and should be full of energy. Can you post a picture of her from above standing on all four feet, or of you dangling her by the armpits showing the shape of her torso? Three pounds sounds like a lot for a Marshall female, but it might be fine if she’s on a big frame.

She’s an acceptable weight for health reasons, don’t fret. She is a larger ferret for a female. Might have seasons reversed.

She's beautiful. I've had 3 ~3 lb females, and by coincidence (?) they were all DEWs.

Okay thanks guys. If she does actually have her seasons mixed up does that affect behaviour/energy levels as well?

Nah, it shouldn’t aside from eating and maybe sleeping a bit longer. She should be perky and ready to play when she’s awake at eight months. She might have an underlying condition. Might be time to schedule a vet visit for a general checkup and some blood work.
