I give my ferrets Wysong Epigen digestive support. For one of them, (Bro) his poop looks loose and not formed 75% of the time. Sometimes it's more formed and sometimes it's more loose to almost watery looking. When I used to give them a teaspoon of sweet potato/chicken baby food once a day it made his poop look completely normal and formed. I've read starch is bad so I only give them some baby food if the poop looks too runny. He's also very excited about getting some baby food. The only other foods he likes is egg yolks, salmon oil and chicken bones. I had to stop giving them chicken bones. I'm pretty sure he has IBS. My question is, would it be better to give him a teaspoon of sweet potato/chicken baby food a day to make his poop look formed even though it has starch in it? Compared to not giving him the baby food but having his poop look less formed to not formed at all? Would the amount of starch in a teaspoon of this baby food a day create any health problems ever?
Also, when I first got them I forgot to ask the previous owner what food they were eating and didn't know much about ferrets and thought they looked like wild animals so they would be fine eating anything. I guess like dogs. So I bought Kaytee fortified diet and they wouldn't eat it so I gave them this sweet potato/chicken baby food and they ate that then I took them to the vet. After seeing the vet I texted the previous owner and he told me they were on Marshall, then he stopped texting me back. When I weened them onto the Kaytee there poops looked really good and he (Bro) would eat too much. But, I tried some and it made my mouth feel weird and it didn't taste right so I got this Wysong kind. Wysong tastes like a supreme pizza and didn't make my mouth feel different.
Thanks

HAHAHA a supreme pizza? Thanks for that review, I haven’t tasted it, though I have tasted other kibbles! Usually they taste like stale livery matzo farfel. Pumpkin was a substantial food fed to ferrets many years ago, but now it’s generally reserved for passing blockages. There is anecdotal evidence that a lifetime of eating pumpkin leads to higher instances of insulinoma popping up, but no official studies. I don’t think that small an amount, plus it’s cut with chicken in the baby food, would matter that much. Wysong is one of the best kibbles you can buy as far as purity of ingredients goes, but many ferret owners report diarrhea on it, even their digestive support formula.
If you choose not to give the pumpkin, make sure they’re taking in plenty of water to offset the diarrhea. Chronic dehydration is very common with kibble-fed ferrets because they don’t like to drink enough to sustain themselves healthily because they expect to get a lot of the moisture they take in from the diet (wet meat). You can even try soaking the Wysong in water.

One problem with sweet potatoes is that they can lead to kidney/bladder stones. A meat only baby food is fine for treats, and I have given it to a sick ferret as a supplement or when they wouldn't eat their normal diet and mixed in their soupies as well. Bobo and Lilly have eaten the same diet since I got them (Bobo was a year old, Lilly was 10 weeks). Bobo has always had soft poops while Lilly's are well formed.
