One of my boys has cage rage anytime he gets put up , but both of my boys are almost completely free roam throughout the day. they both get 4+ hours of play time a day. sometimes i will put them up for naps or if i’m busy and don’t want to eye them, as any ferret owner does. but i don’t understand why he freaks out anytime he’s in his cage for just a little bit.

When you put them in their cage, is it during that time when they are sleepy or when they are at play and active? Ferrets tend to be more active during dusk and dawn. I will put my ferret in his cage when he gets sleepy so I pick him up and place him in his hammock and he will fall asleep there. He is always waiting for me when I get home to let him out though. lol Do you give them something in their cage for them to do?

Sometimes it is when they are active. But i’m only having this issue with one of them. Like right now, as i’m typing he is throwing a fit and it is 4:47 am. He will bite the bars, scratch anything he can reach, kick around the litter box. I have his favorite stuffed animal in there but he pays no attention to it or any of the other toys i’ve put in there. I’m just at a loss lol

you could try covering the sides of the cage that faces out toward the room.

Wow, you are up super early too! Did your ferret wake you up? Unclejoe has a good suggestion. It may let them know it's still sleepy time. lol Are they possibly hungry? My ferret wakes up early and wakes me up because he wants breakfast. lol

When they're outside the cage, do they get 4 straight hours of playtime, or is it split up throughout the day? 4 straight hours can be problematic for some ferrets, since their short bursts of energy means that they can be up playing all the 4 hours and will get mad when they want to play some other time but they're in the cage. Try opening the cage when he is raging and see what he wants to do; was he hungry, thirsty, playful? That can help you see why he rages.

At night my ferret is in a bedroom with his cage door left open. He has a chest of drawers which he crawls thru the back for a second sleeping place. I also have a Rubbermaid bin in there with an entry hole with blankets. I have a cat sack in there for him as well. But just like yours, mine is still ready to get out of the room around 4-ish. You can hear him scratching on the vinyl floor. My husband leaves that time to go to work, so we are up. Since my house is ferret proof---I feed him a couple of mice in the kitchen pantry. He puts himself up and I go back to bed.
Besides at night, he is a free roamer but we had to do a lot of things to ferret proof our home so that he can get a lot of free time.

My ferret is basically a free roamer except when I go to work or leave the house. He sleeps in my bedroom with me instead of in his cage at night. lol Sometimes when he wakes me up real early in the morning to eat, I will close his cage door and he will eat then go back to sleep. I do that because I want him to eat his food and wasn't sure if he would take the food out of his cage and hide it in the house somewhere. LOL I know he won't hide his food now so other times I will leave his cage door open and he can come out when he's done eating and will usually come back to my room to go to sleep again after eating.
