So one of my ferrets, Ferrah is a lot bigger than my other Pandy and they are both females. Is Pandy a runt or is ferrah just big for a female? Then my other question is do people ever chop part of baby ferrets tails off? We noticed that Pandy kinda has a stub at the end of her tail and its shorter. Heres a pic

I don't see a pic... I've had a couple DEW females that were over 2.5 lb. Almost all the rest (I've had 30 ferrets, total) of the females were between 1.5 to 2 lb, with most closer to 2 lb. A rather rare condition called a cordoma can occur in ferret tails which may require amputation above the cordoma. www.all-about-ferrets.com/chordoma-in-ferrets.html

saw your pic. griffyn. After you bring up the pic that you want to paste---copy the bb code and paste that here. It should turn into pic when you hit post quick reply. Here is a sample screen shot of what your page will look like in imgur. All this is from the computer. I have not tried this from iphones or ipads.

I have never heard of that happening ---wonder if ferret got hurt in some way when it was a tiny one. I think someone here had their ferret's tail tip get chopped off in a recliner.

As long as they're active and in the right weight range, I wouldn't worry. Also some ferrets overeat, so make sure to distinguish between fat and large. His tail definitely seems shorter than normal. Perhaps it got cut, but it doesn't seem to bother him. Chordomas are rare, but thankfully they're easy to spot. It's like a ball at the end, you can feel the mass and it's not smooth in shape, it's round. Here's a pic: www.themodernferret.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/img_6368-680x510.jpgThat's a really small one, but they get bigger over time and are easy to remove if they do get large.

Just my thoughts on the tail. I did have one guy whose tail was shorter than usual and ended abruptly like a piece was missing. I had got him from the RSPCA (he was a foundling) so his history was a mystery. As he grew the tail still seemed shorter than my other ferrets but it did grow to look like it tapered off in the usual way rather than looking chopped off.
When I was a kid, we had a cat who lost half her tail when a door slammed on it (blown shut by the wind as she was going through). It was always short and abruptly ended.
I also knew someone whose female ferret had barely a tail at all because her mother had chewed it off when she was a kit (both inexperienced mother and breeder).
Both ferrets and the cat lived quite happily with their truncated tails.

Was there not a member here who was a beginner breeder who had a tail chewed off one of her kids? I didn't mention that my Pandy was one of the big girls

I don't know, the one I knew was someone who used to go to meetings of the Canberra ferret club back before it disappeared into obscurity.

Ah, that suggests you are either thinking of the breeder who used to do the kit cam and was in Devon? or crazy ferret lady who sent Heather some kits, both very experienced breeders (especially crazy ferret lady, being third a generation breeder)

Bingo! It was the first one. I met Dar24 on her webcam discussion and chat. We were watching the cam one night as her jill took all of the kits out of the box to parts unknown while we all panicked. An American and a Canadian watching a webcam in UK together. We were married in 2011.
Bev (crazyferretlady) had her own forum
