Is this normal or could it be ear mites?? I think I’ve noticed my ferret scratching more frequently and at her ears.

Only way to tell for sure is to look under a microscope, but it could be. The colour reddish brown is normal, ear mite infestations usually produce black ear wax, but the scratching is suspect. Normally I’d suggest swabbing the ears with topical ivermectin, but you can’t buy it off the shelf anymore thanks to the pandemic! So you’ll have to get it prescribed by a vet. Selemectin also works.

Do the ear mites only stay in the ears? Or do they make her whole body itch?

Ear mites stay in the ears.

They definitely prefer the ears. A drop of olive oil in the ear will usually kill ear mites, but I also used otc ear mite remedy

Are there other types of mites that go all over the body? And this may be a dumb question but do you keep your ferrets on flea medicine year round?

mine get Advantage II from about late April till October. The kats go in and out, but the ferts are indoors and they play together. It gets cold here so the fleas and ticks aren't a problem in fall/winter.

I would have her checked by a vet. Olive oil may drown some of the living mites, but will do nothing for he eggs and it will continue to be a recurring issue. They are very easy to treat with an Rx for Revolution.

U do give a second dose of revolution to kill eggs that have hatched--I forget now if it is a week after or two before giving the second dose. It has been a long time since I treated my baby at the time and others.

I always assume that they have earmites. I use Thornits Canker powder (Thornits Ear Powder). It is made in the UK. Use a small paint brush. brush the powder into the ears. Wash all bedding in very hot water. If you have carpets, vacuum them well and try steam clean them if you can. The mites make come back if you don't kill them all.

you definitely need to repeat treatment. I inspect ears every time I trim nails (about every 10-14 days) and when I hold them, when I think of it. Once I suspect a problem, I treat with the mite treatment and repeat 1 and 2 weeks later. That usually does the job. It only takes a drop in each ear. I have used olive oil when I couldn't get the mite rx
If you happen to have a microscope or macroscope, (I did for a long time) you can swab a sample and look at it under magnification to confirm.
