I'm trying to give my 2 babies more room in their cage.... they are absolute POOP-GUNS. Oatie was always neat about it, going straight into a corner, but Soapi is the dainty type that can't stand it, and goes all over the litter box in whatever area is clear until I can get it scooped out. She also didn't like going where Oatie would go, when she was first moved in. Now it's not a big deal, and they don't really care who goes where. So I had put 2 litter boxes - one on the top level (half their playspace) and one on the bottom that's always been there for easy access when they're out and about in my apartment for playtime. (They only ever go in their cage, they're.... neat, but also not??)
I took the top litter box out, and spread one of their blankies, and a new cushion in there, and cleaned the entire bottom tray. But I can't remember what the scent stuff is that takes the potty smell out that they can detect that I can't. :\ I want to remove all traces of that area being a potty, and make litter-cleaning much easier. Basically, I'm half-retraining them since they get along much better now to only need 1 litter pan. 2 is just too little space.
Any ideas on de-scenting?

I use vinegar. Hahaha-- I poor it straight on and then wipe down with water (or not) Most people do a spray dilution with it.

THAT'S it, yes... I completely forgot vinegar was the secret. I might have to move to puppy pads rather than their normal litter box, too, anyway. Soapi tends to go RIGHT in front of it, even if it's clean. It's irritating, but fixable. But yeah that top box is gone, and I see them sniff the plastic where it was (it was glued down, and their smell right in front of the box on the actual tray is what I'm worried about.) I don't know what it is lately, but they both have really annoying potty habits.... I miss Oatie's neat and tidy corner pile.

ferret=irritating. 100% in the cage, 75% out, stand on pad and poop off. Ferrants changing out pads, go in that one corner where there is no pad for 1 minute. COR BLIMEY

Update - I've finally after a month of waiting for my order, gotten puppy pads. It takes up about 70% of the bottom floor, so my guess is I got 'em too big. I'll get a smaller size next time. IMMEDIATELY started digging at the corners. I sprayed the edges with apple vinegar (which has done WONDERS by the way for Oatie's habit of bar biting to tell me she's hungry outside food-time but not so much about the war with the litter box) and now I'm hoping for the best. I put some nasty old poops on the pad, and they've sniffed it, so they know where it goes. Now's food-time, and I filled their water bowl extra high. The sooner they go, the better. I'm just starting to run outta ideas... Update 2 - They've stopped digging at it, and finally realize what it's for. it looks a like neater in their cage, they go on it.... easy easy easy cleanup. Had to duck tape edges down, but otherwise, this is a win. No more litterbox pain.

That's great news. My two boys are mirror opposites of one another. Aron is very good with using the pads and never have to clean after him. Sean, on the other hand, only uses the pads at night, but will be determined to do his business in front of the kitchen sink.
I use a home made cleaning solution that uses 2 caps of concentrated orange oil soap and a swig of vinegar and it works wonders.
