My ferret was recently diagnosed with eosinophilic gastroenteritis, an overgrowth of Candida in his intestines, and IBD after a few vomiting spells and mucoid/bloody stools. Lymphoma was ruled out, thankfully, but he has been on a mixture of Marshall’s Duk Soup and Critical Care every four hours for a few weeks now because he will not eat on his own. He has been on Amoxicillin, Metronidazole, Nystatin, Prednisone, Famotidine, and Maropitant Citrate as needed for vomiting. His last dose of Metronidazole was on Thursday morning, Amoxicillin on Sunday night, and Nystatin tonight.
He has been relatively okay, aside from still not eating or drinking on his own and the occasional “bad” poops that you’d expect from his diagnoses. Yesterday, though, he had the first gagging fit he’s had in the 10 days since diagnosis. I was able to get the anti-emetic in him and he seemed fine after that.
Today, he has been fine up until about 4:30 when I noticed him going to the litter box repeatedly. I mean 15-20 times in 30 minutes. What have been relatively decent looking poops have now been replaced with completely clear (no color) mucus. I am keeping an eye out for a more normal looking poop (that he had immediately before the clear mucus began).
I immediately called the University of Tennessee VMC (who diagnosed him originally) thinking that I was going to have to rush him in, but they didn’t seem too worried about it because he isn’t vomiting (last time he had his anti-emetic was 8:00 AM yesterday) and is still taking the Duk Soup/Critical Care mixture.
I guess my question out of this very long post is - is this normal for IBD? To pass completely clear mucus sometimes? I know if the professionals aren’t worried, I shouldn’t be worried, but I just can’t seem to help it. He’s had mucoid poops before, of course, but never clear, and Googling isn’t returning anything helpful. What do you guys think?
