We have 4 ferrets and a 3yo dog in our home and recently adopted a kitten. She had her fair number of health issues (she was a barn kitty) when we first got her, so she felt crummy and was super mellow. Now that she feels a lot better, she is starting to do whatever she wants - she jumps on the counters/table/raised potted plants/bites. Our home is ferret proof (plants and everything important is up high), and she has no issue getting wherever she wants.
We tried teaching her "no" alongside having fun/positive commands (come, sit, spin, stand, ect.) and those work well to get her off of surfaces, but they don't prevent her from terrorizing my plants or running up and down the counter the moment I leave the room. We try and keep our surfaces uninteresting (the table has nothing on it except an occasional laptop, on the counters everything is stored away in hard plastic containers and no dishes are left out unless in the sink).
Has anyone taught a cat to respect spaces via the sin bin? I started to use it after she broke a branch off of one of my favorite plants, but I'm not sure if it actually makes a difference. She purrs the entire time she is in there (could be nerves, but she looks very relaxed).
Does anyone have any tips for training kitties to stay off of counters and tables? We are pretty open to having her around and terrorizing the home, but I draw the line at dead house plants and flaunting her little poo toes all over my sanitized surfaces.
Also, we are not open to spraying her with water. We are working hard to get her comfortable around water/shower.
Thank you!
