Update: It's not a good update. We took LB off pred and left her on the antibiotics until her system had recovered and we could be sure that the bacteria was gone. However, without the pred she went back downhill to where she was before. We put her back on the pred and she's going back for more tests on Tuesday.

Oh no that's not good. You may have to keep LB on the prednisone.

Can you verify if they did a glucose test? I discovered our first case of insulinoma because I noticed a ferret was losing weight from not eating.

Corvidophile Not quite like before but yes. It's not really green but very runny with undigested fats. Charlie We might have to unless it proves to be something different that we can treat. With this happening it's likely that she has insulinoma. unclejoe We didn't do a glucose test but that's what I'm taking her back in for on Tuesday. The good news is that with taking the pred again she was back to having a good appetite in about 24 hours. It's good that it helps but it also means that most likely this is insulinoma.

I hope your little one gets well soon, bless his heart.
My vet said the draw from the neck is more accurate for testing insulinoma. Not sure why as i did not ask. The tech did admit she did not get a good prick sample on my male--- and because he was young, and the number was so low, they decided to draw from the neck also and the number was higher.

abbeytheferret6 Thank you. I'll ask about it while I'm there and I'll post when I get the results.

Dang I had a vet in FL that claimed to have had a "colony" of ferrets in her care while in vet school. She drew from the base of the tail and I thought Alice was going to bleed to death. storm The good news (if any) is Bear is responding to it and that pred is pretty cheap. We have had good success with prolonging lives while on it.. Abita was on pred for well over 3 years and lived past 8 years old. Prissy was on it for a long time as well, and lived 10 years (Real Canadian Ferret)

Wow. I wished my ferrets would live that long.

unclejoe She is reacting pretty well to it though I do hope that it's something else. If it is though at least the pred works. I've had one on pred before (Twiggy) and she did do well before developing complications. abbeytheferret6 It always seems too short.

Wow. I wished my ferrets would live that long. Out of 30 ferrets, we've had a total of 6 that we know made it 7 years, a lot of unknown ages because they were re-homes. On the other side, Sumos barely made it past 3 and had juvenile lymphoma, I'm pretty sure, Alice had kidney failure at 6, Poppy got an abscessed tooth at 6, Scamp got a blockage at 3, Goober disappeared at 3 years old, Jaffa from a backyard breeder in Canada got all 3 Big Ones and lost the fight at 6. Over time, we've managed to increase the average lifespan to 7 years, providing they don't kill themselves or slip out the door, mostly due to hard experience and learning to recognize early signs of the Big 3. storm No, it's never enough time, but I am glad Bear is responding to tx.

LB is back from the vet and frustratingly they were not able to get enough blood to do bloodwork. She is doing better and we are going to leave her on pred for a while along with pepto bismol as needed to see how she does. She was examined again but not much new. It could be insulinoma though another vet suggested that it could also be inflammatory bowel disease. The thing is we can't know or rule out insulinoma without bloodwork and we can't know about the other without surgery but that one is way too risky. Both though are treated with pred and so we're going to keep treating her for a while to see if she gets much better and then try more blood work later on. She is pretty perky now and keeping an apatite so hopefully we'll be able to do it next time.

From Little Bear's response to the pred, sounds like she is on the right medication at least! Glad to hear she has her appetite back and is perky again.

She's still getting better as of now. Hopefully her upward trend continues. I hope to conclusively find out what it is but even if I don't, I'm just glad to see her better.
