Appa, my 8 month old rescue had to be brought to the vet today.
Last night at about 6pm (of course when all vets here close) he projectile vomited twice out of the blue. The vomit was a light brown and sort of chunky. He’s raw fed but hasn’t been fed anything new lately. Last meals he had were turkey heart and duck neck. He then had a few watery yellow slightly pink stools. He was lethargic as well, not acting himself. He did eat some egg yolk and drank some water and his stool improved a lot. It was still the same colors when squished, but more formed. We went to bed. I did check him for dehydration but nothing stood out. Gums were normal and did the scruff test.
This morning he was still more sleepy than usual. He did drink some water with the meat, and he stashed some meat but I didn’t actually catch him eating any of it since the day before. He made a poo that was normal looking but slightly mucousy.
We went to the vet (new vet, I just moved to the area) and I was immediately lectured on raw feeding and how he could have Salmonella or another parasite or bacteria. She was still kind about it, and answered all my questions.
She felt him up and noted his intestines may be slightly inflamed. She only mentioned this once though, and didn’t seem concerned. She didn’t feel any foreign objects and all organs felt fine to her. She did note that he was very dehydrated! She did an IV. She said I can choose to do blood work to confirm IBD. But I could also do the medicine first to see if he gets better and then come in for the blood work if needed. I opted to do that. She sent me home with Metro (in case of a parasite, they did take his stool but she just wanted to give this as a precaution?) Famotidine and Marbofloxacin for the next 10 days.
She also wanted me to buy Carnivore Care but i figured my raw organ soups at home would do a better job. Was that a wrong assumption?
She said if he does indeed have IBD he will have to be removed from the raw diet which is concerning to me.
Appa slept the whole way home and he perked up quite a bit. He climbed the couch, ate a piece of chicken neck and went back to sleep. He has had a very normal stool and ate some organ soup of turkey heart, chicken liver and salmon (his favorite!) he ate all of his portion in one sitting. He crawled through his tube a few times but has been sleeping a lot of the afternoon.
I honestly don’t know how to feel or think. It’s also worth mentioning he’s had a busy week. We had 3 guests over for a few nights and he loved them! He cuddled and played pretty much all night. But he’s just been so sleepy. He is the biggest and fluffiest of the bunch, the apartment is well air conditioned so that’s not my concern. I just don’t know what to do. I’m doing the first round of meds tonight, but I don’t know what they’ll do. Sigh.
