my dog Buddy is a 6 year old border collie that we found about 5 years ago wandering the streets. he was abused 20 pounds underweight. had two broken legs. so i felt bad for him and i have not neutered him. vet bill today was $375.00. he had a blood test (pre-surgical b/c he has to be neutered in 2 weeks), prostate check (his prostate is enlarged), anal glands squeezed (lots of gunk in there apparently), DHLP vaccine, fecal test, heartworm test, antibiotics (he is getting a dental on the same day as his neutering and i have to give him antibiotics for the 4 days prior to surgery) and the heartworm prevention. i am queasy just thinking of what the neutering and teeth cleaning are going to cost. i didn't even ask because why bother. he has to get them done. i have no choice i have to get him neutered because his anal glands are always full and he's very puffy around there all the time and his prostate is very enlarged.

Well, if he were a person all that work probably would have cost $5000.

Have you tried opening a credit? I know the vet chain I work at (VCA Animal Hospitals) has an option where if you're strapped for cash, but the animal they're examining needs extensive care, you can pay like...a 50% deposit fee, then the other half of the payment, you can slowly, but steadily, pay off the fee when you have the money. I don't /think/ there's a time limit, but then again, I haven't been working there long...if you have one nearby, you'd have to ask. But a lot of vet places now are taking payments, just for the fact so very few people are taking their pets in because of money troubles, or buying vet supplies online because its cheaper...vets are hurting, and so most can make deals with you, if you ask. (Of course they won't /tell/ you about credit options. ) I know with my tortoise when she was rescued, I had to put her on a lot of medication, because she had URI bordering on pneumonia. And the medicine was expensive. So my vet would once in a while wave the exam fee, so I could afford the meds. Because honestly, some money is better than no money these days. You might be surprised to see how many vets will work out a deal with you, as long as it means they get paid something.

I am so sorry you have to pay sooo much! Buddy is cute. He reminds me of my mother and father's dog, who was also our family dog growing up. His name is Leonard and he is a border collie mix. I swear those dogs are too smart for their own good!

Personally, I think vet's are so expensive because they know we'll pay it??? Actually, they do have a TON of overhead going out, not including staff salaries, along with UTD medical equipment sized for various species of animals, ongoing cost of education, etc.

Personally, I think vet's are so expensive because they know we'll pay it??? Actually, they do have a TON of overhead going out, not including staff salaries, along with UTD medical equipment sized for various species of animals, ongoing cost of education, etc. The vet clinic I work at does 40% mark-up on food, 100% mark-up on drugs and other products and the mark-up on procedures and things like vaccines is CRAZY (i.e. It costs me $2 for an xray that costs clients $125). But when you look at our actual profits after paying for supplies, salaries, running the clinic, time, sending the vets off to ongoing education seminars, etc. we actually don't make a lot Also vet equipment is SOOOO expensive. Like hundreds of thousands of dollars So that's why. But still it is very costly especially since we don't get any kind of help from the government because "pets" aren't considered family. That's the part that makes me mad

Dang I wish you were closer to me. My vet for my cats/dogs is a good old farm boy type of vet and everything is cheap, and he is an excellent vet. 50 dollar flat fee for dentals, including if he has to pull teeth. 60 to neuter a boy 80 to spay a female..Vaccinations are cheap, everytime I go in with two dogs for a general health exam, a fecal check for worms and all vaccinations with rabies its 60 dollars. He charges me 10 dollars to clip my labs nails and squeeze her anal glands (her nails are thick and black so I'm always scared to cut them back too far myself)
When ann ran away and came back she had alot of bite wounds and was running a temp. for 38 dollars he buzzed all the fur away from the wounds, cleaned them, dressed the one on her leg, gave me antibiotics to give at home and gave her a shot of antibiotics before we left. I've never paid more than 75 dollars to see him. My ferrets? 200 minium each trip..ugh...
