Ive talked to and read about many people using johnsons baby shampoo to bathe their ferrets. While I haven't used it to actually give my fur kids a bath. I have been using it to hand wash their hammocks every 3 days or whenever I start to notice a smell on them. Before using the baby shampoo i used dawn dishsoap, then switched to a ferret shampoo i got from petco with the thought process that if i could use it to bathe them, it should be ok to wash their bedding with, right? I am a first time ferret owner with 2 boys. one 2 months old, and the other 4 months. I really like the smell of the baby shampoo, but I was wondering if it was safe to use? If not what products would you recommend for cleaning hammocks/blanlets? I use vinegar or dawn normally when i wash out the plastic/ metal portions of the cage.

I use Arm and Hammer non perfumed laundry detergent and just wash in washing machine. I have put vinegar in the softener dispenser of washing machine. I keep flannel baby blankets and thin sheets (thriftstore finds)in my cages for them to burrough under and it absorbs ferrety smells. I change these right regular.
While I like Downy, I think it is causing mildew on the rubber of my front loader. I dare not leave the door open which they say will help, but I am afraid my ferrets will climb in there and I might overlook them.
I practice forum recommendation and that is not wash ferret with any type of soap. Warm water will clean off anything like feces that might get on them.

No reason to shampoo a ferret. Most of mine have never had a real bath in their lives. I do give warm water soaks to get off the muckies if playing in litter boxes etc.

That is probably best, I wont use it to bathe them. But do you think its ok to keep washing their hammocks with it? I dont use very much and make sure to rinse it thoroughly. I dont have a washing machine so I was trying to find a safe gentle soap to use while hand washing their stuff. I could get unscented baby laundry detergent, or unscented shampoo.

I bought FerretSheen when Sparrow had to be bathed once he couldn't walk on his own anymore. It's an aloe ferret shampoo with a nice clean scent, but very light. I agree with Sherry though, most of the time there is very little reason to shampoo a ferret. Sparrow never had a bath in the 8 years of his life until he couldn't move away from his feces. Before that, he'd never had a bath because he never needed it. As for my ferret's things, I wash them with All Free & Clear right now, but I pretty much buy whatever "free & clear" detergent is on sale. For the cage I use Natural Chemistry and when I do a deep clean I just pour some in a bucket of warm water and use a Magic Eraser to wipe everything down. His food and water bowl I do wash using Dawn dish detergent.

Same as Sparrow, I never bathed Maisie once in her life until she was sick enough (lymphoma) to get poop stuck to her fur. I only washed the area that needed cleaning, not all of her. The first time I used Johnson & Johnson's baby shampoo, but it smelled so strongly that I didn't think it could be good for her. At the very least it must've be irritating to her to smell so differently. After that I just used a very gentle hypoallergenic unscented hand soap, and it seemed to be fine.
