Hello! I am a new member, but I've lurked on the forums for a time off and on. I have a 8 year old ferret named, Sparrow, who I've had since he was 6-8 weeks old. Until late last year my ferret was healthy and happy, but around July/August he had a mast cell tumor (which went away on its own) and his vet felt like he might have Adrenal Disease, but at the time the focus was on just making sure the tumor went away. His tumor went away, but I started seeing signs of issues with him that seemed like old age, but also what I thought might be insulinoma. He was eating a ferret food that I thought was good because I had good results with the brand before with another animal. I now see just how important their diets really are. I now feed Wysong w/ Digestive Support and sometimes Wysong Archetype 2 Rabbit Formula for Ferrets. He has been improving, which I'm so happy to see. I am going to put him on some probiotics, to hopefully help him build up some good bacteria as he's quite old for a fur ball. Sparrow has been an awesome fur baby and I hope he sticks around with me for a few more years. I joined this forum because its focused on holistic ferret care, and I try to take care of all my animals using holistic remedies when possible. This forum has made a lot of things about ferret care far easier to understand when you experience something for the first time. I realize you all aren't vets, but that's why I like it. Sometimes I just need people to get to the point. I think I ranted enough, lol! I look forward to meeting you all.

Hi, and welcome to the forum! That's wonderful that you've had Sparrow for so long. Adrenal disease tends to show up 2 to 5 years after neutering/spaying, so if Sparrow was neutered as a kit, he almost certainly has it by now. The good news is that it's easy to treat with a deslorelin/suprelorin implant every 6 months. There's also a melatonin implant that's mostly to help with itchiness and fur regrowth, although it sounds like you don't have that problem. I'm glad that you're looking into his diet and that you've being seeing improvements! If you want to try switching to a fully raw diet, you can sign up for a mentor and they will walk you through it. And again, welcome to the forum!

Welcome! I hope Sparrow is along a few more years, as well! After lurking, I am sure you know how supportive this group really is.

And again, welcome to the forum! Thank you! He was neutered, as I got him from a pet store when he was a baby and the vendor neuters and descents them prior to delivering them at the pet store. He's not showing any signs of itchiness, actually never has. He has lost some hair on his tail but its not looking like rat tail or anything, just more from age and right now only noticeable on the tail. His body's coat is a little rougher looking, but he's good overall. If he were younger I may try the fully raw diet, but at his age I think I'd be asking for digestive issues.

Welcome! I hope Sparrow is along a few more years, as well! After lurking, I am sure you know how supportive this group really is. Hello, yes I have been helped by this site tons. Its hard to learn a lot about ferrets without having them, IMO. I think you can read a book all day long, talk to the vet, but what helps me is being able to discuss an issue with others who might have more experience. I spent at least an hour just looking at the forum yesterday trying to find a good probiotic for him. I look forward to learning more from you all!
