What is the best way to take the BG on the toe? Scruff them? Distraction? .... How "deep" should the lancet be set to? I know the pads are thick so I want to make sure it penetrates. Mine goes from 1-8 (8 being the deepest). My ferrets need to be scruffed for BG testing. I couldn't find a way to distract them enough to ensure they won't move their foot and smear the blood. I set my lancet to just over the halfway point (3 out of 5 for mine) and it works well there. I hope all has gone well with the vet and you're feeling better. Nothing like a ferret to make us crazy, huh?

according to my vets, a bg in the 90's is slightly suspicious but below 80 is HIGHLY suspicious for insulinoma (that is if there is no other explanation for low bg). A normal ferrets bg should be over 100.

Glad to hear the second reading was a bit better! The vet should be able to just pull blood at the clinic for the bloodwork. I've never had bloodwork done on a ferret before but they've done it on my hedgehogs, and I imagine if they get blood out of a hedgehog without sedation, a ferret shouldn't be too hard. Depends how wiggly she is though. Keep up posted!

The vet couldn't make the house visit today but he will try to fit us in tomorrow. Pixie has been acting very happy and perky so I'm feeling hopeful

have you continued to poke that poor ferret with the lancet? LOL i think you just got a bad reading the first time and that is why it was so off. that is a huge difference between the first and second reading. btw, you mentioned something about pixie shaking when she first wakes up. sonny does that and he's 10 months old. all ferrets shake when they first wake up (i've never had one that didn't). the reason they do this is because their body temperature drops (just like ours does sometimes) while they are asleep so they shake and that's how they bring their body temps up.

Haha no I've resisted poking her Thinking back she didn't eat much breakfast. Could that contribute to the low value?

ARG. I won't get paid until Friday so the visit won't happen until Monday. I will probably test them all this weekend after soup.
