Gums are nice and pink, eye whites are white. She is looking at me like "Mom stop poking at me! I'm fine!"

poor baby. you are probably freaking out for nothing and the bg tester was not accurate. it is very easy for those things to give a wrong reading.

I definitely have my fingers crossed for you and Pixie From my experience with home testing machines, their results are always lower than the ones the doctor's have (just because if you think about the $30 you paid for yours versus to the couple of hundreds they paid for theirs) so I am sincerely hoping that you just got a false low reading! As far as the kidney testing goes, see if you can just get a basic liver/kidney panel or a pre-anaesthetic panel done. CBC's are pretty pricey, as are comprehensive diagnostic panels but the pre-surgical panel and basic liver/kidney panels only focus on the liver and kidney function and should be much cheaper. Then if that shows any abnormalities, you can save up the $ for the more extensive bloodwork. Jaundice (yellowing of the eyes/gums) and the urine-breath only appear in very late stages of kidney failure. My 15 year old dog we put down in january had liver failure for the last 5 years of his life and never showed any symptoms (we only found out on a pre-surgical panel we did when he had to have lumps removed). He only had kidney failure in about the last year of his life and only in the last few weeks when they pretty much shut down did his breath smell like urine. Never saw any signs of jaundice on the skin/eyes, but his stools were very yellow and mucosy (that's more liver than kidneys though). Hoping for the best for your little Pixie

So I fed her around 12:30 (around when I started this thread). She also ate some more a bit after that. I think the last time she ate was 1:30 at the latest. I retested her BG and got a reading of 97. If it IS reading low, then that isn't bad, right? I might retest her again in an hour or so. I got a new meter that only needs 0.3 uL of blood. My current one needs 1 uL. Just need to buy test strips ($$$!!!). I think the vet will make a house call tomorrow, maybe check all the fuzz BG and see how off my new one is.
Thanks for the info on the basic panels. I'm going to call and ask about how much that is. Do they just draw blood?

oh jackie. i'd stop poking the poor girl and just wait for the vet to come tomorrow. a bg of 97 is good on a 3 hour fast. keep in mind that your bg meter may be off --even the "good" ones are usually off (usually they are on the minus side) so it is most likely higher than 97.

She is such a good girl about the testing. She sleeps through the whole thing! But I'll stop and let the vet handle it tomorrow. Thank you for your support, and please say a special prayer for my baby girl Pixie.

i will pray for Pixie but i am sure that your bg was just off earlier today and that you are overreacting... its ok though. we know you are only freaking out because you love her. we've all been there. .. like the day i rushed Sonny to the vet because i thought he swallowed those ceramic rabbit ears.

I would wait for the vet. Have you calibrated your meter with the vet's meter yet or is a meter you've been using before and know that it's correct? That isn't really a scary number that you got the second time but is there a reason for such a wide variable between the first and second test? I would personally look at that as a reason to see the vet, not that she has insulinoma. She's eating kibbles? Anyway....that's what I get for falling into a thread so far along. Good luck, a healing candle is lit and I hope that you just find out that your meter is off ciao

Not sure why the variation. Shes been raw fed for 1 yr (she's 2.5 now). She ate breakfast, then I tested her BG 3 hours later. The monitor is not calibrated to my vets. I probably reacted too soon. The second feeding she ate soup and lots of it.
Possibly she didn't eat much at breakfast and had low BG when I checked it? Maybe my meter is really off?
Vet can't make house call tomorrow so were shooting for Thursday.

Heading to the store now to look for test strips for my new meter. I am going to attempt to take Trixie's and Dixie's tomorrow, and see what kind of range theirs are in. What is the best way to take the BG on the toe? Scruff them? Distraction? I tried doing it while they're sleeping, but Trixie and Dixie always wake up when I start putting pressure on their toe so I didn't bother. Pixie literally sleeps through the entire ordeal How "deep" should the lancet be set to? I know the pads are thick so I want to make sure it penetrates. Mine goes from 1-8 (8 being the deepest).

I was always told to add 20% to the home meter. It actually worked really well when compared to the vets by adding that.

I hope everything turns out to be nothing, Jackie.
Out of curiosity and hopefully NOT for future reference, what is a normal bg for a ferret?

Jackie , Please do not panic about the bg but a vet visit is good- keep a record og the reading & when(how long after eating) i would not fast a ferret any longer than 4 hours!! you can always use a new lancet & test it on yourself - then replace the lancet for the ferret. My meter goes 1-4 and i use 4..
