My prior ferret, Archie (may he RIP) transitioned to a whole prey/raw diet easily. My new young ferret, Lizzie (Wizzie Weasel) is a bit picky. I adopted her at 7 mo., so she's about 9 mos now. I began raising mice for her (as I did for Archie) and she is an exquisite hunter (I turn them loose in the bathtub together), but I find that she most often eats the tail and the back feet and then stashes her kill for later. She has eaten an entire mouse, but that's not the norm. I bought a good meat grinder, so she gets organic ground chicken breast with bone and I recently found a supplier of rabbit that I grind myself. She doesn't seem to like the rabbit (Archie gobbled it) and she won't eat turkey. I also grind lean beef and of course, always add some chicken liver as the organ portion of her meal. She also gets an egg yolk once a week. I will eventually be raising quail. Ok, enough history. I do have a question. I'm assuming stashing food for another time is instinctive behavior however, I'm not sure how long to leave the stashed food in her cage. I usually remove the next day, but wonder if that's necessary. Any input?

I generally will check and if there is stashed food I leave it and don't give them any more until they finish it.
If it starts to get stinky I will then remove it.
