1. Where did you first learn about natural diets for ferrets?
Here at holistic ferret forum.
2. Please describe the type of diet you would like assistance in switching your ferret(s) to. Be sure to include if you are interested in feeding whole prey (live or frozen-thawed) and if you are wanting to FULLY switch to a natural diet or PARTIALLY. If you are unsure what kind of diet you want to put your ferrets on, please express that and we can help you find the best type of natural diet for your ferret.
I am interested in learning more about ferret nutrition, and I am open to discussing which is best for my ferret. Ultimately, I would like my ferret to have a varied diet which includes whole prey and franken-prey with commercial raw blends being used from time to time.
3. Why are you interested in switching your ferrets to a natural diet?
My research concludes that this is the best way to increase the likelihood of my ferret having a long and healthy, disease free live. I believe ferrets are obligate carnivores and prolonged exposure to carbohydrates causes insulinoma in ferrets.
4. Do you understand that switching your ferret to a natural diet can be a lengthy, arduous process? Its not an overnight switch. It requires a commitment of several months at minimum. Your HF Mentor will be more then happy to assist you in switching your ferret(s) to a natural diet, but you need to be equally as committed. The switch takes time and effort every single day. It can also be extremely frustrating at times. If you aren't willing to tough out a potentially lengthy switching process, you have major life changes approaching (baby on the way, moving, starting school, getting married/divorced, etc), or limited time due to work, then it might be a better idea to wait on switching your ferret's diet until you have more time. Are you willing and realistically able to make the necessary time commitment?
I do understand that switching diets with a ferret can be a long, difficult process. I am willing to make that journey if need be. Luckily, my ferret already consumes raw food and is under a year old and I believe this puts him in a better place than many. I would like to work with him while he is young to get him on the best diet possible and get him adapted to a wide variety of meats. I notice that he loves beef. I devote a lot of time to my ferret and will do whatever it takes to transition him to the best diet possible. Though I do not believe it will be much of a transition for him since he already enjoys raw meats.
5. How many ferrets do you currently have? What are their names? Ages? Genders? Do they have any health problems? If so, what medications are they currently on? Are they overweight? Underweight? How long have you had each ferret for?
I currently only have one ferret. His name is Pan, his birthday is on July 24, 2017. He will be 19 weeks this Monday, 12/14. He weighed about 3.25lbs at his last vaccination about 2 weeks ago. He is a ferret I acquired from a breeder at 7 weeks of age. He is intact.
6. What diet do you currently feed your ferrets? (Please include all treats, supplements, etc) Do they already eat some form of soup?
I give my ferret raw Rad Cat switching between Beef, Venison, Lamb and Pork. He doesn’t seem to enjoy the chicken or the turkey as much. I also give him freeze dried organ bits from time to time. He’ll even eat fish! He seems to love salmon.
7. Have you ever tried to switch your ferrets to a natural diet in the past? If yes, what happened?
My ferret has always been on Rad Cat since I brought him home.
8. What additional information about yourself or your ferrets would you like to share?
Pan is from a from a breeder. He is still intact and I will need advice when it comes time for his des shot.
In addition he is also accustomed to getting a whole-prey mouse from time to time.
9. How often during the week do you have access to a computer?
I have access to a computer every day.
10. Please post a picture of each of your ferrets (if possible).
I am still learning how to post pictures on this forum, as it seems there is no way to drag and drop.
11. Do you have a scale sufficient to measure soup ingredients AND to regularly weigh your ferrets?
Yes.
12. Have you met the requirements for this program? Are you at least 18 years of age? Do you have your scale, a place to access meats, hearts, livers, etc?
Yes. There are several very good butchers in town I trust and can get access to organ meats.
13. Do you understand that if your mentor or an admin recommends seeking veterinary care and you refuse to seek appropriate care you may be dropped from the mentoring program?
Yes. I take seeking medical attention for my animals very seriously. If my mentor recommends seeking medical attention, their judgement will be accepted.
