Hello everyone! I posted this earlier on the guest thread as I was waiting to be confirmed as a member but I was desperate to write! Also bare with me, I'm obviously new to this and I'm not sure if I'm doing it all correctly! I had my two 8 month old girls spay on Tuesday morning, brought them home at 4pm. While they were in the carry box I noticed the smaller of the two, Bella, wasn't right at all. She couldn't use her back legs, and was flipping and diving and turning all over the place. My mum described her as one of those little red mood fish you get in a Christmas cracker!! Mum said it might be the anesthetic, everyone takes to them differently so wait 24 hours, put her away for the night and she was going like a maniac in the hutch and it was heart breaking to see. Yesterday morning I got up, popped her on the utility floor and her back legs looked like frogs legs just laying there she can't lift herself up. I felt she seemed a little better, put her back in the hutch and she started flipping up and around again so I called the vets and they said bring her straight up. They have done some neurological tests which she responded well too, her heart sounds fine. She's always eaten, been drinking and pooed absolutely fine she seems bright so the vet said she's happy for her to come home. My other ferret is absolutely fine almost too fine!! Last night when I put Bella away she was a lot better, just dragging herself a long, but no flipping around. This morning I put her on the floor again and she was using her front as normal then her back legs she was moving her little feet to grip the mat and pull herself a long but she still can't lift her belly up. Has anyone else ever had or heard of a reaction like this before??? I'm hoping her body is in shock and gone on a strike, or the stitches are a little tight. Thanks in advance guys! X

I'm so sorry about your Bella! I'm gonna tag some of the more medically experienced admins for you. Hopefully they will have some advice or input on this. Sherry, katt, Heather.

I'm wondering if she had a spinal thrombosis. Hi Sherry, I have just had a look on Google at spinal thrombosis, it sounds very similar except Bella's legs seem very tense, I was wondering if she was tensing as she was in pain, and almost spazming. Last night she managed to get from one side of my jacket all the way round my back and to the other side! Then this morning she climbed over the door edge of the hutch (which she hasn't been attempting) and sort of stood on both of her back feet, as apposed to look like frogs legs, and her back arched slightly as if she was holding her belly off the floor. I picked her straight up and took her in the house to show my mum where she done it again on the floor in the utility!! Going to the vets again tonight they have heard from an exotic animal expert so going to test her blood sugar level and go from there. Even though she is far from OK still, she's definitely improved from Tuesday! Thank you also Linda for tagging

It does sound like a spinal thrombosis (which is just a clot)...she's just had a major surgery. It stands to reason as does her recovery time line ciao

I'm hoping it's a reaction to anesthesia How is she doing now? Moving her legs is a good sign, but A clot in the wrong place can be devastating if not resolved. If she's not moving normally by the morning, please contact your vet.

Thanks everyone for the replies. Both went to the vets last night for a check up. The vet tested her glucose levels and they were very low, he tested again and they were a little higher, because of the change he tested a third time and they more than doubled. I'm going back on Monday because of the inaccurate reading he wants to test again. He says he's hoping it's just abdominal pain, because she's improving every day. She's still eating and drinking lots with normal poos!

What shall I do now then? She is back at the vets tomorrow for bloody sugars to be tested again. She is improving every day!

Hopefully, she will continue to improve. My boy's thrombosis was caused by a cardiac issue but he continued to improve as much as was expected considering. I noticed that you've become suspect of possibly a metacam reaction, this too is a possibility. Good luck and hope your wee one makes a complete recovery ciao
