Hi everyone, my name is Zuly.
I haven’t had ferrets since my 30s (now 54). Wow, so much I didn’t know way back when, that this forum has taught me in the last few weeks, Thanks for that!
We had our local pet store order us 2 kits (no rescues in our area). We picked them up on Dec 6th at 8 weeks old. We named our boys, Smokey and Bandit. They are almost 12 weeks old now. I have been reading/lurking since before then.
I started them on a partial raw diet almost immediately. First with chicken wings and now have added grass fed beef heart, chicken liver, frog legs, rabbit, pork, ground buffalo and beef. They hated the shrimp and scallop, they looked at me like I was crazy, LOL. I will introduce deer meat that I separated and froze in another week. I am waiting for it to be frozen 3 weeks. I have been following the guidelines of the Frankenpray Menu (I printed a calendar and fill in their meals). I am happy to say that they like most of the raw meat.
The only thing they may not like as much is the ground beef. Today I picked up a bottle of Wild Alaskan Salmon Oil at Petco. How many times a week should they have it and how much at their age? I may add it to the ground meat to see if they like it more.
The other day I powdered egg shells since they always seem to leave bones behind, not all but some. I gave them their first egg yolk with 1/8th of a teaspoon of eggshell, for breakfast. Should I stick with eggshell or buy some bone meal powder? And how often should they get it?
I was feeding them Blue Wilderness Duck while they were in their habitat at night but stopped 2 nights ago. They are on 100% Raw Now, Yay! We take them out first thing in the morning until we go to bed. They are now having 4 raw meals while in there large playpen (14 panels) during the day. We have not yet finished ferret proofing the house but did get the sectional done this week.
The other night I was reading up again on the raw only diet. One of the threads that I read was by BitByter – Raw Diet FAQ
. I found it interesting that they were fed twice a day so I’m thinking that 4 times a day for kits is ok. Whatcha think? I rather not have raw food in their habitat. (I hate bugs, lol. I don’t even put kitchen scraps in the garbage; it goes straight to the freezer until trash day.)
Do you know of any freeze dried clean meats (not treats) that are affordable, that I can maybe feed them while in their habitat at night, if you think it's needed? (just thinking out loud)
Also, if they are eating raw meat, should I also include raw soup to their diet?
Sorry for the long thread, hehe.
I am so proud that our boys are taking to the raw diet so well and quick, thanks to y’all and the wonderful info on your forum.
Great to be here,
TIA, Zuly
