Not sure if everyone saw my thread Pocket! but I took in a ferret that someone had found in their backyard, overall he looks to be healthy, but I've noticed some things. First thing is that his ears were filthy, I cleaned them with a q-tip while he was sleeping (he was in a dead sleep) and they're starting to get dirty already (I just got him Thursday), could this be ear mites? It looks like the same kind of ear mites that cats get. If it is what should I do for it? Another thing, I've noticed a few fleas, what can I do for this? I've also noticed that when he eats he makes really weird noises like gargling/wheezing sounds and twists he head back and down like he's having trouble eating. Is this normal? He is eating kibble but I'm switching him to a diet that Heather suggested in my intro. I'm taking him to the vet Monday morning, what all should I have her check for? Is there anything I need to get while I'm there? If I remember correctly ferrets need to be vaccinated(please correct me if I'm wrong), since we don't know anything about his history, should I get him vaccinated? If so, what for?

It does sound like he has ear mites. As for fleas, I believe some here use revolution? Not sure though. They don't survive at this altitude, so it's not something I've ever had to worry about. Also, make sure the vet checks his teeth. And if his poops are tarry, black, or kind of coffee ground consistency, he could have an ulcer. Which will affect his appetite. Same with a bad tooth.

Yes revolution for cats 5-15 lbs. Safe on ferrets.

No the vet hasn't met Pocket yet. He's in quarantine, any new animal that is brought here stays in quarantine a minimum of 31 days What is ADV? I'll check the links out! I have to pick up some revolution for cats for the hedgies so I'll get some for him as well. His poop looks good, no tarring or runs. His teeth are crooked, I don't know if that's normal or not, it's not really bad, I didn't notice until I was taking the pictures, which I'll post if I can get them resized. It also looks like he's got some coming in on the bottom front. You can't really see it in the pictures because they're blurry, sorry I'm not great with a camera The front top teeth slope and kinda look like cell phone bars. Is that bad? When he bites down the 2 sharp teeth(canines? I don't know what they're called) on the right have a bigger gap between them than the other two on the left, is that normal?

As for gaps, not sure. It could be the way he's biting down. Which again, could be triggered by bad teeth in the back, or even a jaw misalignment. That sort of thing is being noticed more often with some of the farm ferrets.

Thanks for all the help everyone I will definitely be getting him tested for ADV. As for his teeth, I'm going to resize and upload them in a few minutes!

How hard is it to treat ear mites?
Never would have though he was that old, he's so small. Well small compared to ones I've been around atleast.

That's the clarity level that I'm seeing too. In a couple of the photos there appears to be a missalignment of the bottom jaw but it may just be how your holding his mouth (I'm not stating that you're being rough with him or anything, it just happens when one is showing teeth, it may or may not mean anything). The teeth look good for a rescue and there doesn't seem to be a problem with any darkening on the back teeth. Other than the appearance of a misalignment I can't see any issues with his teeth. My guys got treated with ivomectin for ear mites. Thor had to go in for a minor surgery and the vet found a couple of carcasses so treated him and gave me some for all the rest of my brats. When you do rescue it sort of goes with the territory ciao

That is one thing- all the animals in the house will have to be treated. My ferrets got ivermectin ear drops, 2 doses 10 days apart. The cats got advantage, one vial on the skin at the back of the neck.
