I know someone who has a ferret "Lulu" and Lulu is having some issues. The owner has Strep.. and of course step can't be given to ferrets.. but Lulu is showing the same symptoms as her owner.. I asked her about Lulu's poops and she said, "Well right now they look like a greenish diareah color.. they dont look firm and dark like before.. really light colored and what not. mabe not green bbut not brown." Then she also said, " i felt her tummy and its so full, she isnt pooping and i think she is constipated.. as nasty as this sounds yes, but true :/" At 1st I was telling her to feed her some Duk Soup to keep her feed and hydrated.. what else can I tell her? btw I'm almost 100 positive that her ferret is kibble feed. I'm trying to find a poop chart and duk soup recipes if anyone can help me with that, that would be awesome! Thank you! UPDATE: So they took her to the vet and it turns out that they think she had a tumor. They decide to put her to sleep b/c they thought she was to sick to survive the surgery. Sad day. RIP Lucy

I found this online: This is a post directly from Dr. Williams on Strep throat and ferret: "The answer is no and very on the odd occasion, yes. Typically, ferrets are not considered to be carrier or victims of "strep throat". Although rare, dogs enjoy been implicated within carrying the classic cause of strep throat, the bacterium Streptococcus pyogenes. However, lots other bacteria enjoy been "accused" of cause a syndrome like Strep throat – staphylococcus, Hemophilus influenzae, even Neisseria. Ferret can conceivably contract staph infections from humans, but it is more expected that they will be hit by a meteor." Dr. Bruce H. Williams, DVM is currently a moderator of, and consultant to the Ferret Health List. www.afip.org/consultation/vetpath/ferrets/

I sent her recipes for Duck soup www.ferretharmony.com/viewtopic.php?t=26and a poop chart www.ferretharmony.com/viewtopic.php?t=1793 and then I told her to give Lulu a tablespoon of Pure caned pumpkin and if Lulu doesn't like it try putting olive oil on it. If the pumpkin doesn't clear her out I told her to take Lulu in to see a vet b/c maybe she ate something she can't get out herself.. Do I have everything covered??

Definitely give the pumpkin and olive oil.
Honestly, I wouldn't wait to get her to the vet. If it's a blockage, time is of the essence.

Get that ferret to a vet asap....this little one is sicker than this forum can handle. It sounds to me like a blockage but that is for a vet to decide. ciao

This is what she replied back to me with, " Unfortunetly i dont have any msheoney for that... with me not working its hard ;( She seems better today but her tummy is still really full." I told her to give her the pumpkin like I told her and call in to vets to see if they can do anything for Lulu right now. Some vets are really nice about having people pay later.
Out of curiosity what make you guys think it's a blockage and not just constipation or something? I read someplace where someone had the same belly problem and they just used pumpkin and everything started moving along. How can you tell the difference?

Constipation is more rare for ferrets than it is for humans. I would think that if they do get it, it would only be during radical diet changes, and mine have never been constipated. If a ferret isn't pooping like it should be, and has crazy colored poop and has a full tummy, that sounds like blockage territory. Hopefully, pumpkin and oil and perhaps a bit of Vaseline will help.

How long should you give the pumpkin, oil and vaseline until you take the ferret in to be seen? Or should you just take the ferret in at once?

It depends on the severity of it. When Koda had his blockage I wanted to take him in at once, but it was the middle of the night. I kept a VERY close eye on him all night, and fed him pumpkin and Vaseline. He was frantic, clawing at his face, gagging and throwing up, and running to/from the litter box. He was pooping bits of stuff, and threw up a huge piece of rubber lizard. I called the vet first thing in the morning and took him in. He went into surgery a few hours later.
Other times, when things are less severe it is okay to wait a little while and see if the pumpkin solves the problem. But ferrets can go downhill FAST. There is no set time, not even a guideline as to how long is okay to wait. It all depends on the ferrets, their reactions to the blockage, the severity of the situation, etc.
I am glad that your friend is taking her in. Please keep us updated.
As to how we guess blockage...I can't say that I have Ever heard of constipation in ferrets. Ferret constipation=blockage. The bloated belly tells me stuff is going in, but not coming out, and that gas is building up from a blockage. The weird poops indicate stress, and GI tract and digestion difficulties. Small poops often indicate that not enough stuff is able to pass through - only a little at a time because the doorway is blocked.

With Lucrezia, she was fine when we went to work in the morning, by 5pm, we could tell there was something very serious going on. She refused to come out of her cage(10 months old), when I got her out, she immediately curled up to sleep. She refused everything, even 'tone. So I wound up syringing both pumpkin and lax alternately. She was lucky, and passed it a few hours later, so the vet didn't need to do surgery, although she spent the night anyway, just to be safe. And yes, ferrets have become constipated before(dehydration and crap kibble), but the result is the same as for a blockage. If they can't poop it out, it is life threatening. Literally. Please, keep us updated on this?
