Olivia is back at the vet to get re-X-rayed today to see what's going on with her lung infection and mystery circle in her lungs. Unfortunately the specialist the vet was sending the X-rays to was at a conference all week and is just back today so we won't know his thoughts for a few days. Olivia had been doing awesome (minus the gross poops) until yesterday when she vomited a few times - gross brown vomit (guessing the colour was from the liver and kidneys she had eaten) and now the vet feels something in her abdomen... She is being sedated now and getting palpated and xrayed under sedation so please keep your fingers crossed that the lump is nothing abnormal and that her lungs look better

So I am finally home (another 3-4 hour vet trip - thankfully we were only charged $20 this time because the vet felt bad - I guess I have bad luck and always end up going during crazy emergency time : . Olivia's X-ray showed that her strange lung thing is still there but hasn't gotten any bigger, which is good I suppose. The rest of her lungs look okay so she finishes up the antibiotics tomorrow and should be good for that. As for the strange thing the vet felt in her abdomenon, it didn't show up as a blockage on the xray and she palpated Olivia again (unfortunately the sedaiton didn't even touch Olivia - and apparently she's gotten a reputation as the "difficult ferret" ;D so the vet couldn't get a really good feel). So with the xray and the palpating she's not worried about a blockage and thinks it was just the gastric lymph node she felt which she said can get enlarged in ferrets and can be a heliobacter infection sort of thing but we're just going to wait for the other vet's opinion and go from there. Agh! I have such terrible luck with pets. I swear all of my animals have issues. I am just so sad that the time I should be spending enjoying my healthy baby ferrets is spent worrying constantly, sifting through poop and vomit, treating coughing attacks and always wondering when I'm going to have to grab Olivia and rush her in for an emergency visit becuase her mystery illness has suddenly gotten worse. I guess, on the other hand though, how terrible would it be if I didn't have Olivia and someone who wasn't willing to spend the time or money taking her to the vet had her. I just want her to be better, or to at least have some answers though. Mystery lumps aren't cool Thanks for all the kind wishes though And on the plus side, all of these vet trips have turned Sophie into a snuggle bug (she always comes along and sleeps on my or my friend's lap - she's decided he's hers ;D) and I managed to cut all of Sophie's nails for once. Silver linings right?

Heaven forbid someone else brought Koda home... And same with Tito... *hugs* I will be thinking of you and your little girls. Stay strong and they will too. They are young and otherwise healthy, a big plus on her side. Keep us posted! PS did they check for fungus in her lungs....? Could that be it...?

Thanks Katt I'm happy she's with me and getting all the care she needs and you're right otherwise she's happy and healthy so I do have that to be grateful for and whatever this is, she's a strong girl and can pull through. I'm not sure about the fungus, interesting thought though, I'm going to see what the vet thinks if that could be it. How would one test for fungus in the lungs, I wonder. Definitely worth mentioning though, thanks!

It does happen, but I believe(could well be wrong), that pain and weakness usually accompany other symptoms.

Welcome to the frustrating world of treating ferrets There have been more than a few times where well trained ferret vets have found themselves going with a best guess scenario and treating the symptoms they know. If they guess right, you're away to the races, if they guess wrong then you're back to square one and trying to find an illness again . It's one of the most frustrating and costly parts of being owned and loved by fuzzies.....it is also one of the most heartbreaking. ciao

Definitely no pain or weakness, Sherry. She is war dancing and dooking like a happy little fert this morning. So hopefully it's not fungal. I don't know how common that is, anyways, I've heard of animals getting fungal infections in their sinuses or upper respiratory tract, but never the lungs. I'm really hoping the U.S. vet has some ideas/insight. Olivia isn't really coughing anymore (she still does make that "hacking"/"something stuck in her throat" noise 1-3 times a day but at least it's only once or twice and not the 8-10 time coughing fit it was before) and she hasn't vomitted since Sunday (and Sunday was only the 4th time she's vomitted since I got her and it happened after a week of no vomitting). I know what you mean though, Heather, it's so perplexing because she checks out 100% healthy otherwise, and now that the coughing fits have stopped it's just random hacking noises and very sporadic vomitting and that darn mysterious thing in her lung. So it's kind of like what on earth could it even be? I will definitely update when I have some more answers, in the mean time, I just hope it's nothing too serious. I don't have a vehicle for the next week, so I'm not sure how I'd be getting to the vet past daylight hours, so here's hoping there's no ferret emergencies.

Have your other ferrets been sick in any other way during within a similar time frame as olivia? I read your comment about sifting through poop and coughing, etc. There is a systemic corona virus that hits ferrets that can affect the lungs, gut etc. I can result in masses in the abdomen/mesentary along with issues in the lungs.
I will look up some info on this and post it (or at least the link).
