Ok, so I bought some new raw cat food brands, and flavors and I'm going to log them here so I, and other people with picky ferrets can have some options. I'll also include how I have always introduced my ferret to new foods. Like most ferrets, Cookie is very picky, and when he gets it in his head that he doesn't want to eat something there's not much I can do about it.
First, My method:
I use the scruff and stuff method at first to get my ferret to try the new food. Then, once he begins to show interest I let him down from the scruff, and allow him to eat it out of my hand, or a spoon. Once he is comfortable with this I try to get him to eat it out of the bowl on my lap. Finally, I take it to the cage, and see if he will eat it there. Repeat steps if necessary. Results may vary, but be patient.
Now for the fun stuff:
The first raw I ever fed, and the one I have consistently fed for the past almost year my ferret has been alive-
Primal FDR Turkey Nuggets: (93% turkey) Great starter! The texture is very consistent thus making it easy to convince even the pickiest ferrets to give it a chance. It has a very pleasant smell; almost sweet, not like raw meat at all. Easy to rehydrate.
New foods-
Primal FDR Venison Nuggets: (93% Venison) a bit of convincing needed, but he enjoyed it. The texture is a bit less consistent then the turkey, but still had very little chewing needed. The smell was a bit like green beans with a metallic tinge. It was quite a bit firmer, and more difficult to rehydrate, but not too bad.
Rad Cats Raw Diet Turkey: (96% meat and organs) Some convincing needed, but he enjoyed it. The texture is not too consistent, with some chewy chunks of meat and organs, but even my ferret, who hates chewy things, was willing to eat it. It smells very strongly of raw turkey, which is sure not a smell I enjoy, but it's not too bad. It was pretty easy to prepare, I just left it in the fridge for 24 hours, scooped a bit into his bowl, and added a spoonful of warm water to bring it to room temp.
Will update as we try more food. I still have two more, so far, that we need to try.
Please feel free to help out by leaving a review of the foods you've tried!
