It's definitely not too late to sign up! There's still lots of fine tuning to do and lots of info to learn! You can get duck tongues?! I'm not sure where they would land but I'm leaning towards muscle meat...possibly treat. I know tongue is a good source of taurine in beef.... katt do you know much on the nutritional value of duck tongues?

We have a large Asian Market half hour away and I found most everything imaginable EXCEPT brains.(and pancreas) Then I went to a new farm and asked about brains and apparently the FDA has "outlawed" them- at least around here- because of mad cow disease which humans can get. DARN!! I wanted some brains!! The good news is, they may be able to get me some pancreas. I got some duck feet, but haven't tried them yet. The duck tongues are gruesomely cute, LindaM! They are smallish and on the end where they are cut (gak!)they are very hard, either bone or cartilage- maybe the keritinous stuff like their bills. It is not his favorite part.

Haha, yucky. I think I might need to blame you for letting me know of the duck tongues along with the fact my ferrets had some S&C Duck, Duck Goose frozen last night.. somehow I kept dreaming about a duck running after me and biting me really hard, lol. As for the brains, that's been pretty much the same story I've been getting everywhere, so sadly I don't think my ferrets will ever be getting some. Would've made for a cute photo too, ferrets being all "Braaaaaaiiins...", especially fluffy, little Athena.

So is that the story with pancreas too? I just came from the farm where they thought they could get pancreas and it seems that from what they said, it's the same story with selling brains- not for sale. Interesting though what the farm was told was, they give them to the tigers that live near their farm.
Maybe that would be the benefit of live prey--they get braaaaaiiins and pancreases! Or maybe whole killed prey would still have the organs? this is where a whole prey/live prey feeder (WPLPF) jumps it to answer this one.
Thanks in advance WPLPF

Honestly, not heard of that being the cause for pancreas, I haven't actually fed my ferrets that either, so I haven't actively looked for pancreas, mine mostly get something easier like kidney instead. The arguments I've come across is that the butcher/store could get in trouble for selling those kind of things to people, since it's not considered to be for human consumption, even if you explain it is for your ferrets. Some places will understand that and take the risk, others just flat out refuse. Luckily, most of the Asian markets do not seem to have that many qualms about such things. I'll tag some of the whole prey feeders for you. @machan, katt, Heather, Sherry

Ok, I could vaguely remember warnings about feeding the pancreas but for the life of me could I remember what it was. Here's what I found out, it's for dogs but most of our information is based on dogs and cats Pancreas is a normal part of a raw-fed diet. In addition to feeding pancreas for variety, pet caregivers seek out pancreas to combat a lifethreatening condition called EPI. There are several dog breeds and some cats predisposed to EPI, Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency. By adding pancreas regularly to an EPI-afflicted dog/cat's diet, pet guardians have taken charge of their pet's health and restored vitality for years to come. EPI has also been kept under control by eliminating kibble and instead feeding a raw diet as Mother Nature intended. It says to be cautious as overfeeding will cause digestive issues...basically liquid stools but feeding too much of any organ will cause loose stools. I can't see where this added to your organ mixture will cause a problem. I can't find any reference for it causing a problem like cow's brains and such spinal fluids ciao

I found pork brains in the frozen section of my local hyvee, next to the tubs of chicken livers and chittlins, and just a couple doors down from the whole frozen duck/goose/turkey/CGH.
Thanks for that info heather!

Thanks Heather! @tessvictoria Sadly, the Hyvee chain of stores are only in the Midwestern USA. I've checked out all the kinds of local stores here in Utah, and no luck, and talking to butcher just nets me the same old, "Nope, can get the store in trouble, can't do it." I haven't found any brains in the local Asian or Mexican grocers either.

Why does nobody want to give my little zombie fuzzballs any braaaaaaainnns? I'm sure Athena would look just horrifically darling noshing on some brains. I might see if I can get some online at some stage, I've been getting most of my raw locally from the Asian markets or grocery stores, and their Stella & Chewys from a local pet store. I could probably pop in an order at one of the online raw providers, perhaps one of them has some brains.

Pancreas a a fantastic addition to their diet as part of the other-organ content. I am of the opinion/suspicion that IBD ferrets would particularly benefit from it (think about it - we recommend pancreatin for IBD, imaging feeding the actual source of those enzymes rather than a concentrated form).

Thanks everyone for such a great discussion on pancreas feeding. I have a feeling it is a great food if I can find it. But can someone tell me if whole prey means the pancreas is intact?
Thanks so much!

hey I should have thought to check online before posting so much Here is a site that may be a source for LOTS of raw parts. Has anyone heard of this company in Canada? Among their many products are veal brains and pork pancreas! www.highlandcountrymarkets.com/cash-carry-raw-pet-food

Whole prey should be fully intact and include the pancreas 😊 I have not heard of that company but if they're able to ship to you I don't see why you shouldnt. Maybe see if you can find reviews online of that company?
