I think this is the right place to ask if it is not my apologies!
I work on a farm so I can get Most Organs a lot of the time... Anyway We usually butcher mostly Beef. Sometimes we have Pork and wild game people bring in to have cut but not very often. My question is if I get Beef heart is that okay for the heart part or do I need to get different types. I would like to offer a verity but Beef heart is more readily available where I work as well as the Meat shop down the road. The Shop has it ALL the time. If It is how long does a single beef heart usually last for a small ferret? I don't want to buy too much and then get stuck with more then I need. I already have One Beef Heart that was bigger then my face all cut up so it would fit in a Tupperware container. If they need others can they have Pork, Deer, or Moose hearts?
Thanks!

I believe beef heart is as good as chicken heart for the taurine it provides. All muscles have taurine but the ones that work harder have more. Beef tongue is another good taurine option. Heart and tongue are also fed as muscle meals instead or an organ meal, and because taurine is water soluble, they pee out what they don't use. You still want to find a couple more proteins to rotate through. The organs don't count as far as different proteins (liver, spleen, kidney, etc). They need at least 1.5 full meals of heart a week, more of you like, and freezing does not effect taurine levels so if you have too much, freeze for next time.

Beef heart is fine As for how long it will last- the average male will eat approx 28oz of meat/bone/organ in a week so about 4.2 Oz of heart a week. Again this can vary for a number of reasons.

Thanks! I can get the other Organs that I need. Liver, brain, ect. I just was not sure about hearts because I can get Beef hearts everyday of the week the other kinds are more of a special order thing. I wasn't sure if they can just have that one kind that way I could start getting orders of others in. Thanks for the help!

I won't lie, I am a bit jealous that you have such easy access to beef hearts!

I can easily get Beef Heart in the frozen meat section of either of the Fred Meyers grocery stores near where I live. One of them usually even keeps packages of chicken hearts (no gizzards included) in stock.
