I am going to take all my kids for a check up and for shot. I want to know should I get rabies If I don't need it. My kids are only around my dog and they don't go outside. My puppy is up to date on all his shots so they couldn't get anything from him. My kids have all had a distemper shot before but does anyone really recommended them? I know in some rare cases they can die from to many shot at once. I need more info. If you can bring up article links for me that would be great thanks.

I live in a small farm town a hour outside a big city. No one cares as long as you keep your pets in your own yard witch no one can seem to do.

Plus I cant find anything about the laws on ferrets in my town. All dogs are required to get the rabies vaccination. Sadly no one enforces that law.

I don't vaccinate at all. Weigh your risks....there are several threads on board that discuss this particular issue. There is also a thread about what happens when it all goes wrong, whether you vaccinate or not I chose not to. If they come down with distemper you loose whether you vaccinate or not. ciao

Thank you so much Heather Ill look for the posts. I really don't want to take a risk if I don't need to. The risk of them coming down with it doesn't seem worth the risk of reactions. I am never around sick animals If I was a vet maybe I would think about it. I am still going to do a little more research on the matter. Has anyone had a ferret with distemper? When you go for your check ups do your vets push for vaccination? I have to find a new vet but I am sick of vets pushing for unnecessary treatments.

I no longer vaccinate either. And yes, you CAN bring distemper into the house. But since our city doesn't seem to have any outbreaks, I choose not to. Yes, it is the law for yearly rabies vacc's here, but I no longer allow anyone I don't personally know and trust to handle my ferrets(or my cats, for that matter, I don't do that one either. As for doing the vaccines, there was a shelter recently in the U.S. who had all their ferrets UTD on all vaccines. Unintentionally, a ferret with distemper was brought into the shelter. Last I'd heard, they'd lost 34 of their vaccinated ferrets to the disease Unfortunately, the company who had been making ferret tested distemper vaccine sold to another who quit making that one. If I remember correctly, the only distemper vacc you can get for ferrets now has never been tested for them, only for dogs.
