I know a lot of ferret owners use Ferretone, is this healthy though? I know many ferret directed products are actually not good for them. Also, I've read that many of you use salmon oil, would that take the place of Ferretone? How much and how often is safe/necessary to give?

Yes, definitely use salmon oil in the place of ferretone ferretone is awful stuff for them.. full of sugars I think you can give your ferret up to a teaspoon of salmon oil per week, split up however you like.. I use it to trim nails, one drop on their bellies and they hold still licking it off while trimming. Also I put a drop or two in their food each day to help with their coats, and to help them try new foods. Mine are crazy for the stuff, except for my newest. She hasn't fallen in love with it as much as the other two yet

Here is some information on Ferretone. It's not as "healthy" as people seem to think it is. Animal based oils are a much better alternative, they're easier on the ferrets body and the ferret can also make use of nutrients. Supplements shouldn't really be given unless there is a reason for doing so. On a balanced diet, supplementation is not needed at all. Giving salmon oil or other animal based oils as a treat is fine. Just keep in mind you should limit how much you use. Too often can throw off a balanced diet. Cod liver oil, should be avoided due to Vitamin A and to some degree animal fats also should be avoided. Fats can be used, but again, limit the use. Only use treats when absolutely needed. (Eg. Every few weeks, and/or only when trimming or doing anything that is necessary such as clean ears, or vet trip, or after medication(if allowed.) if you want to spoil a ferret on a birthday, opt for raw meats. Other treats can include freeze dried raw. I have a recipe for a home made "freezer burned" treat if you would like it.

I used to feed my ferrets Ferretone before I found out that it was no good. Now we use salmon oil as our daily treat and for clipping nails. After we first started with the salmon oil their fur got SO soft just within days! We give a little bit of salmon oil every morning and once a week instead of the salmon oil treat we do a raw egg.
