So Olivia's poo is juck plain icky now that she's been on the antibiotic for a 3 days. It's extremely runny, on and off green and just plain blah. I know with dogs and cats diarrhea on antibiotics can sometimes indicate an allergy to the antibiotic but from my experience it's explosive diarrhea and vomitting when they are allergic and just icky poop in general is normal with antibiotics. Correct me if it's different with ferrets, though.
I know that my hedgehogs' poop always goes bright green no matter what antibiotic they are put on and that probiotics always help to clear it up while they are on antibiotics but I've also read that probiotics are kind of useless for ferrets because they have such simple gut bacteria? Is this true?
Is it worth trying a probiotic while she's on the antibiotic? If so what kind and how much?
Or should I just not worry about the poop being icky (there's only 7 more days of antibiotic)? Or should I maybe be applying some vaseline to her bum to prevent prolapse/irritation from the diarrhea?

Is it really liquid? I would try some pumpkin. I don't think probiotics will work at the moment. If it continues to be really liquid you may want to take it up with the vet ciao

I would up the pumpkin a bit, see if it helps. The extra fiber should help to prevent a prolapse.

It was pure liquid the first night, then the next day it was perfectly formed and looked the best it's ever looked (weird I know) and now today (day 3) it's kind of like a pile of mush? Not neccessarily watery diarrhea just not formed either... I will try upping the pumpkin. The antibiotic seems to really be starting to work (no more coughing fits or vomitting at all!) and Olivia seems more playful and happy than I've ever seen her. She was always super active but she's actually starting to dook a bit and play with me and seems giddier than normal so I think she's feeling a lot better so I'd hate to stop the antibiotic or have to switch it up. But I'll try upping the pumpkin and if it doesn't improve, will give the vet a call and see what she thinks we should do. Thanks!

Yeah, I'd leave the probiotic for when she's finished the antibiotic. Then you can repopulate the gut.

Her poop is basically alternating between formed and liquid right now, so at least she's having some good poop days and isn't constant liquid diarrhea. Only 3 more days after today to go, and then I will definitely try a probiotic to restore everything. What kind of probiotic is safe/works for ferrets? (Sorry for the late reply, I've been MIA due to being called into work this week to cover some crazy shifts )

Thanks Heather! I have quite the collection of acidophilus pills from when my hedgehogs were on antibiotics for months, so I will give those a try crushed. I find it's hard to find yogurt that doesn't have a swack load of sugar/aspartame/lactose/other things I don't really like to give to my pets.

Community Health Foods on 10th ave. should carry a good supply. I've also found the balkan plain yogurt does a decent job.
