I've been defeated. We tried pasta and rice. And even if changed regularly, it still grew bugs that spreaf all over the house. What else is safe to use that's not food? I'm thinking kids sand but is that safe? Or does it get stuck in noses, and if swallowed, is it a blockage risk? I am of course worried it'll become s giant litterbox but i guess that's a fine risk to take. We just tossed our last pasta box and Gizmo is really disappointed

Play sand, plastic bags(cut the handles), marbles, plastic eggs, shredded papper, large dry beans can be used as well and shouldn't become infested

Marbles sounds so cool! I'll try one of these asap, thanks!

Is it possible that the rice itself already had eggs/larvae in it when it was purchased? Is there a way to kill the bugs periodically (ie. dry cooking, microwaving, treating with a UV light) but leave the rice safe for ferrets to play in?

I had to scrap my rice box, not because of bugs but because one of my ferrets wouldn't stop using it as a little box.

Are they stashing meat pieces in their rice? Are they using it as a potty box or marking it ciao

Nope, never pottied in it. But stashing meat and eating the jerky later - I wouldn't be surprised. Every time i tossed it out there was no meat there at that particular moment, but it doesn't really mean it NEVER was....
