This afternoon I noticed that Sugar's left eye was a little red around the rim. I thought maybe she'd banged into something or scratched it. She was acting otherwise normal. I checked her again this evening and it's definitely redder than it was. She doesn't seem to be in pain. I can call to schedule a vet appointment tomorrow, but I'm wondering if I should separate her just in case it's contagious. The other two aren't showing any signs at all, their eyes are normal.

It's hard to tell from the pics, is there any green discharge or discharge at all? I don't have a lot of experience with ferret eyes but I do work a cat/dog clinic and I can tell you that eye infections are always nasty and super contagious, so if that's what it is - definitiely see the vet (which you are doing anyways) and I would probably separate to be safe. I always tell clients never mess around with eyes - they can go bad super quick. That being said, it looks to me like hers might be more of an injury that an infection? But like I said I'm really no expert. There's no harm in separating though, and the vet should take care of the rest

I'm not a big fan of eyes either. Even as a nurse, that's the part of the body that skeeves me out. I can clearly see that there's definitely no colored discharge, at this point at least. Her eye does look a little more, er, moist? So possibly some clear discharge, that's also something I'd associate with eye trauma, but no crusting or anything. d*mn, our vet probably won't be in until Monday, too.

Sorry to hear that I know what you mean about eyes, they are just so sketchy sometimes because it can be nothing or their eyeball can be scratched or their retina can be detaching. Is there another vet you can see? I'm not sure what they do for ferrets, but in dogs and cats they do something called a fluoroscein stain on the eye to check for scratches and other trauma - always a good idea to do just to make sure, because if there is trauma, the eye meds they would normally prescribe can actually make them go blind Good luck! I hope her eye's okay and that you're able to get it looked at soon!

Is she a 'bino or a DEW (can't really tell from the photos)? I'm guessing a DEW as Odin's eyes reflect the light in a different manner to this. Albinos seem to go through times where the pigment around the eye appears darker, almost swollen but upon closer examination it's not. Is it the area around the eye? It does appear to be inflamed but the eye is clear with no discharge. It is possible to be an allergy (like us ferrets suffer from pollen allergies). She's not squinting or showing any favour in the photos, both eyes appear equally open. ciao

You're right Heather. She's not showing any wincing or trying to protect that eye, nor is she squinting. Her eye isn't weeping at all, it's clear and bright and otherwise looks normal except for the pinkness around it. It looks a little moist to me, but that might also be my imagination.
I think she's a DEW (she has some slight silver markings). I had trouble trying to figure out if her eye, the rim, was pinker than usual because she has a pink pigmentation to her skin anyway so any patches of skin show pink. Would it be normal for one eye to show more pigmentation around the eye than the other when they looked the same before?

Look at it in the morning and see. With something like this, I would put it into wait and see mode. She's not in any discomfort, she hasn't been in contact with young children who might have eye infections? It's just my opinion but if she appeared to be in discomfort, scratching or rubbing the eye then I would consider the vet but considering that the eye rim may or may not be inflamed I would put this on the wait and see catagory. That's just me. If you're thinking there might be an issue then by all means see a vet. Oh by the way....if she has silver in her coat she's a DEW ciao

The redness/pinkness has gone down this morning but she does have a dark red spot near bottom corner of her eye. It looks like an abrasion. I think she must have hit or scratch the rim of her eye, causing the inflammation. I'm going to keep an eye on it, but thank goodness it looks better.
I'll post pictures later.

I'm glad that it appears to be looking better this morning. Keep an eye on it, ferrets heal very quickly when it comes to small scrapes and abrasions but watch for infections ciao
