I started out with egg, then if it was still bad I gave them olive oil. Sometimes alternating.
last year I decided to try something and it has worked great, So I decided to share.
Ferret Friendly Mayonnaise
2 eggs and 1C olive oil
I put the 2 eggs in the blender and add about 1/3 of the oil. I Blend it for about 50 secs. on low
Then I put it on med low speed and gradually add the rest of the oil to the mixture.
What I end up with is something that looks like Mayonnaise. It does not taste very good to me but the ferrets sure like it. I generally give them about a teaspoon of it a day during shedding season. or When they have coughing and hacking fits.
and if I have some leftover toward the end of the week I add some Vinegar and seasoning to and use it for Mayonnaise for myself.

Just a warning but the friction / heat generated from the blender may be breaking down the lecithin in the eggs. This is the active ingredient in helping prevent hair build up in their stomachs.

Very minimal blending on low speed Just enough to get the emulsion going. I start with cold eggs and room temp oil. Final product is no warmer than 80 degrees.
when my ferrets get a hacking fit, it seems to work much better than using eggs or oil alone. I have a community groomer that seems to always have this problem every shedding season.
I am sure the process of creating an emulsion does break down the Lecithin, but It really does work with a single dose to calm the hacking.

Thank you for this! Charlie was recently diagnosed with Adrenal and has been hacking daily. He just got his implant a week ago so I am hoping it stops the hacking. I made half the batch for him. I think it works better than just the egg yolk and he loves it.

I realize this is an older post that has been recently brought up again...
But is that one whole cup of oil? Isn't that way too much when the ferret weekly oil limit is 1tsp per ferret.
Also, olive oil is still a plant-based oil, in which case many of us prefer to use an animal oil like salmon instead.

Also, olive oil is still a plant-based oil, in which case many of us prefer to use an animal oil like salmon instead. Since this emulsified you are giving less that a tsp of actual oil Probably 1/3 since it is mostly air, It is a temporary treatment so I have been giving for about 2 days and then I don't give it to them again until I hear hacking again. I have thought about using Salmon oil, and I am sure you can. However Since this is a treatment and not really a diet thing I give them olive oil. It has got to be better than the Petroleum jelly treatment. If I use Salmon oil I will not be eating the leftover at the end of the week. Salmon Mayo. EEEWW
